i worked in the stock exchange as a glorified telephonist in one of those little boxes/cubby holes .. loved it though, specially the social life and the xmas bonuses!

then spent 12 yrs working for various stockbrokers/banks in the dealing rooms as a general dogsbody / translator (french) until i was made redundant from barings (of nick leason fame)

it was at that point i decided to leave the city, and retrained as a florist with paula pryke - it was amazing, but i hated the early mornings, working at weekends for other peeps weddings and the grubby nails, so i soon gave that up!

through the above i made several contacts and ran a fairly successful online wedding accessories /corporate gifts business for cpl years, but sold up when i had my daughter as just couldnt juggle the two

worked as a nursery assistant in my daughters playschool (stressful!)

then moved to the country, where jobs are few and far between and took as job as a health care worker in an old folks home to fit around my daughters school / husbands work hours .. i eventually went part time and trained in make up

i have been working as a makeup artist / manicurist for just over a year and just starting mat leave, i hope to train in e/lash extensions so that can offer this alongside my makeup/nail services when i start up again in march - just in time for the wedding season! i then hope also to be in a position to be able give up the security of my part time care work job

im also a sleeping partner in my sisters vintage/shabby chic furniture and lifestyle shop .. she's just going into profit so im hoping to see a nice return on the hard earned cash i handed over one night when she invited me over for a barbecue and plied me with drink !

god i feel old, all those jobs .. and im still only 21 (+20) lol

Gosh until I thought about it I didnt realise how many different jobs Ive actually had lol..............

I used to be a shoe repairer/ engraver and key cutter

Have worked in too many shops to mention twice as a Manageress and loads of times as a dogs body!

A cleaner

Was an Ann Summers rep

Then a Prison Officer

Then an Educational Welfare Officer

and now a Beauty Therapist and I really dont know how I made the transfer from them to now it just sort of happened but I think this is where Im going to stay.............well I think lol

Before doing my HND in Beauty Therapy I worked in Next for 2 years & The Body Shop for 2 years but I knew from about the age of 13 that beauty/nails was what I wanted to do. I LOVE my job & although the hours kill me, lol, I wouldn't swap it for any other job in the world...except maybe to be a professional cocktail taster:lick:

I am a student social worker graduating on 16th July and then going into Social work but hoping to continue to do beauty and nails part time evenings and weekends to keep the money coming in as my O/H is going back to be a student for a year to complete his degree and he will probs be glad to have me out of the house when completing his dissertation!

What an interesting thread!!

I thought I'd add my history to the mix

Im currently a trainee solicitor and have always found the beauty world so fascinating.

Ive done some training but cant seem to find the time at the moment to do all that I would like.

Its so hard with a full time job and all my other commitments.

One of these days im going to to take the full plunge!!

I was a lapdancer for 2yrs :lick:

yes very interesting thread, amazing to hear how some of us got where we are and all totally unrelated...lol

Desktop Publisher, Cartographer
and sprinklings of secretarial/reception work

Hi all

I still am a telephone engineer. Going from that to beauty therapy\nails is one extream to the other! I have had a few giggles on site with a client as I had to cut my own nails down so I can work on their system. They thought i was mad! :D

I worked in Argos and Iceland.

I was a secretary for 14 years, then a mum, then did my training. xxxx

Wow I love this thread! It's so interesting to see what everyone did before. I thought I'll add my short working history

I worked at a DIY store for 2 years when I left school in 2005, then became a Receptionist for Travelodge in 2007 then in 2008 transferred from one hotel to another due to moving locations and started my beauty training which I finish very soon :) the unfortunate thing is I still work for them part time atm  but oh well it pays the bills so that's a good thing lol! x

Yeah this thread is really interesting!

After going to uni to study for a degree in Fine Art, I have worked in Chester Cathedral, Next, a cook shop, a promotional merchandise company and now I work in a building society. I just opened my nail salon yesterday, but am going to carry on at the building society 2 days a week so I can at least pay the rent on the salon :0)

Hi everyone

After finishing uni I was a training officer, a recruitment consultant (YUCK!!!!) and currently an employment advisor and going back to college in Setp YAY

x

I studied Chemistry at uni, and ended up doing a research project in my fourth year writing computer simulations of surfactant adsorption in the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Lab (which I guess was ever so tenuously salon geeky as one of the applications of this research might be in computer modelling of shampoo chemistry and whatnot).

I graduated 14 years ago, and (after a couple of months on the dole) found my first job - at a small software company in Wiltshire which specialised in engineering software for the transport industry (so for a lot of my time there, I was working on software to control ticket machines and whatnot - as well as signals and train brakes and stuff).

Then, in the spring of 2000, I was "head hunted" by a firm in Middlesex that specialised in Web solutions, so moved to the south west London area for just under a year and a half for that job... but ended moving back to Wiltshire in the summer of 2001 (albeit to a different job - this time continuing the work I'd started in Java-based web technologies).

I met Sonia in the summer of 2003... in 2004 we decided to get a house together in Shrewsbury, so there was about 5 months towards the end of 2004 and the start of 2005 where I was still working down in Wiltshire and only getting back to Shrewsbury at weekends... which wasn't ideal...

Anyway, I found a fairly local IT contract role in the spring of 2005 and decided to with that, so quit my old job in Wiltshire and started my own IT consultancy company.

I did various IT contract roles up until the end of October last year... when I decided that it would be much better to "go it alone" and work from home doing my own stuff rather than contract work for other firms in offices... that was partly due to the last contract having got really stressed out with lots of working silly hours and weekends (which ironically I'm doing even more of now - but without a lot of the stress - as I'm working in the lounge sitting next to Sonia with the hi-fi on [currently playing Take That] on my own stuff and no longer having to deal with all the politics that you get in big companies).

So that's me anyway... I'm not a therapist (yet), despite having a big interest in the industry as a whole...

I was a Dental Nurse before I became a Beauty Therapist/Nail Technician, but I would not go back now, doing this is SO..ooo me! my job :D

Professional Actress usuallly in theatre, various productions around the country. Was always doing my own nails with the boots kits and then the cast wanted there's doin and then their mae up...but when i met my husband i stopped and after having my son and a lot of pestering by friends i qualified, went mobile then took over a sunbed shop and been updating, introducing beauty and about to celebrate my first year in there!!

I was a Computer Analyst! couldn't get further from it, thnkfully!!!

Worked for the NHS since leaving school, nurse, midwife, health visitor, eventually ending up in the field of Child Protection.

Have always loved nails so at the grand old age of 50 trained as a nail technician and have not looked back since.:D

i worked in a shop for ten years now i am a stay at home mum seeing i have 3 children under the age of 5 so training up so i can get away with working only short amount of hours around having the kids around my feet lol
sazza x
