Hi geekies!

I would like to know how do you feel when you drive/walk past your competition nail salon? Does it make you feel envious/annoyed/jelous etc
And also same goes for when you get a leaflet through your door for other nail services how does it make you feel?

Also do you think its healthy if you was to feel anger/jelousy/envious

All honest answers please :green:

Hi if I walk past a salon, I will wave and say hi, but yet when I read about there specials in the local paper or they send out flyers, yep I get a bit thingy about it. Oh god, we are only human.....

It is all good, it is normal..........:green:

i think we all take note of what our competition is up to but its all good jelousy really gets us no where how ever much we feel it xx

I'll insert my answers. I'll be brutally honest, otherwise, what's the point of answer the questions?

Hi geekies!

I would like to know how do you feel when you drive/walk past your competition nail salon?
- I don't feel that they are REAL competition. They are NSS......enough said.

Does it make you feel envious/annoyed/jelous etc
- Envious of them having a 'shop space'... that's about it.

And also same goes for when you get a leaflet through your door for other nail services how does it make you feel?
- never got a leaflet for someone else's place..

Also do you think its healthy if you was to feel anger/jelousy/envious
- Human nature to be angry/jealous/envious of whatever it is (be it competition on a business level or whatever). HOWEVER... it's how we choose to deal with such emotions that will define us. I choose to set higher goals for myself and to work harder....

All honest answers please :green:

BUT if you want to ask me if I'm sometimes jealous of my fellow peers here on Geek? YES.. I admit it!
Why?
You have acces to better education.
You live where there's a higher set of standards and have 'honest' competition.
You are close to each other and can find a nearby mentor or geek to brainstorm/practice or just hang out with and talk shop.
You have achieved a level of talent that I'm aiming for and can NOT wait to reach because I'm such an impatient little bugger:lol:
You can compete in more comps.

etc etc etc..

What do I do with this envy and jealousy? It makes me work harder to be a better tech despite the walls I'm up against. Will I B**** & moan and complain sometimes? Yes, sorry to bore you with those complaints. BUT by the same token, this envy is causing me to reach above the limits set where I'm at. Perhaps because of this, I "May" make a difference in the industry locally. If not, at the very least... I'll better myself.

So... back to the question of whether or not envy/jealousy is a bad thing?
Like I said..... it's how you choose to respond to that emotion that defines you.
I'd like to think that I'm making the right choices and becoming a better person because of it.
If not... as my friends, I trust all of you to kick me in the ass when I'm going backwards instead of forwards.

Thanks for your answers guys... Very interesting!

Around one corner to me (about 3 minute walk) there is 1 beauty salon been there around 6 years everytime i go past there i just get annoyed and i think why?? As my friends have been to this salon and their results of their nails wasnt that good so i dont understand why i actually get annoyed.

Also across the road to this beauty salon is a hair dressers which have recently got in a male nail technician to provide nails and ive noticed everytime i go past there is always someone having their nails done

where as on here salon geek i dont get envious at all with other acomplisments just because i know i will be in that high position in time im only young got loads of time to fit it in and thats my aim is to get to the top!

I don't have too many competitors, so to speak, as we're a small town, but the ones I do, I go in and say hi! Introduce myself, telll them who I am, and say that I hope we can all get on and prosper! I usually get welcomed!

The way I look at it, if we can all promote excellence in health, beauty and nails then the industry as a whole in the area gets a good name....and that can only be good for business.

And, it has to be said.....you never know when you may want to go and get a treatment yourself. I for one simply cannot effectively do my own bikini wax, and I don't fancy sour grapes taking over if I went somewhere else and we didn't get on!

That depends:green:
My local competition is Angel fingers and apart from the fact that she is a very good friend she is so helpful and a good teacher:hug:
But do I get mad when I see addys from the local town salons saying £15 per set of nails?
Hell yes, I'm mad that they undervalue our education and hard work. I'm envious that they have family businesses that gives them the working capital to buy the shops they trade from and that they can use that chain of shops to give them the buying power to get their products at bulk discount prices which in turn gives them the ability to turn a profit at a price that would leave me in the red.
But all they are doing is practicing good business and if I could do business the same way the only difference I would make is to offer the best service I could at a fair price, to have a salon that looks clean and inviting to pay my employees as well as they deserve to be paid.
Thats the real reason they make me mad, their shops look scruffy their nail services are basic and they seem to be in it for no other reason then the money. I want my customers to come to me because I make them feel special, make them feel good and when they leave me to look at their nails and think, ok I'm having a fat week and a bad hair day but my nail rock.
Because if their nails rock and I've made them feel special then maybe their hair isn't so bad and they aren't having a fat week.
Oh god I've written another book:o

It used to bother me at first, but not so much at all now. I'm with Susie on the ones who do nails at silly prices but hey they bring me business too, so there is a flip side to them.

I get on well with a few of the other local techs here too and it can work out to your advantage, such as client referrals etc.

I think this is when keeping yourself ahead of the game comes into play and being able to offer services that other salons don't can be invaluable.

I feel good about my competition here since i think that there are 3 salons here that produce very good work. It keeps me on my toes to do my best rather then to just take satisfaction with what the customer is happy with. I always want to do the best that i can, evolve and i think that this is my best stimulance. I have never worried about other salons that offer cheaper services since they often don´t produce high quality nails and i do get unsatisfied customers out of them in return.

My thoughts excatly!!! I'm not really jealous just angry that they undervalue us and the public can't or won't see the difference, and those that do can't always keep you in the black!

Hi geekies!

I would like to know how do you feel when you drive/walk past your competition nail salon?
my competition are all single girls who only have a desk in hairdressers, chemist, shopping centre - I dont go into the first 2 but hear they're getting on fine the shopping centre girl I feel sorry for as she's quiet

Does it make you feel envious/annoyed/jelous etc
I do feel annoyed when I'm quiet and I think that nail clients are spread among 3 places and that everyone thinks its so easy to open up. I'd love to have those girls work here (well not all of them) and just have one rocking nailbar in town that had great staff and real buzz

And also same goes for when you get a leaflet through your door for other nail services how does it make you feel?
I never have, but clients do bring them into me and I just say ah well :irked: and get on with it. All of the places opened after me and undercut me but what can you do......... I have the 8yrs exp and I spent time, money and effort to work my way up to master level, educator, salon owner so hopefully my clients see that.

Also do you think its healthy if you was to feel anger/jelousy/envious
yeah its healty I just dont let myself get nuerotic about it. The girl in the hairdressers was my girl who was poached and I'm glad to say that I am well and truly over it now and I wish all the girls luck as its not as easy as it looks.

All honest answers please :green:

above everything else I have integrity, manners and a good business head. i've been around for a long time and will be around even longer. i believe this and know its sets me apart from others

Where I live there are 2 places (NSS) one of which is always busy. Then there are a couple of other salons that offer nails too.

I suppose I am envious of them as at the moment I am working in a hotel in a boring reception job and doing nails mobile in my time but it doesn't come from a bad place as I know that one day I will get where I want to be and that is what I focus on.

I dont think I ever got a leaflet through the door but I do go in and get their leaflets just to be nosey. I tend to focus on my nails and my business and leave the rest to get on with it.

I always keep my eye on my competition. I think we can always learn something from other people. It also keeps me on my toes. But I don't dwell on it. I just do the best I can for my business and try and give the best nail services possible.

Just to be clear on my comment above, it was regarding NSS techs, not nail tech working hard in hairdressers and their own salons, these i have respect for and would gladly meet and set up with these girls, but the Korean salons American nails are just hurting the buisness for all, and i'm finding hard to educate clients as they just 'see' cheaper deals etc...... Saying that i'm jealous of some of the fantastic korean nail art that i've seen, i keep hopeing one day i'll be half as good as that!!
