I am currently working on a BBC 3 series about when beauty goes wrong. Its part of a season of films which will be transmittted over the summer.

I am looking for contributors who are happy to talk about their experiences with us. Just from reading some of the blogs it seems that you have all worked with people who have at some stage told you about their experiences with weaves, near death waxing experiences, eyelash tints that have almost resulted in blindness etc.

This is not watchdog and we are certainly not pointing any fingers. This is very much a personal look at beauty. We are also featuring positive stories told by strong, very individual characters.

I would love to hear from you, even if its for a quick chat. Please do not hesitate to contact me on 0208 2258794. Or drop me a line at [email protected].

Here's an idea, send some nail techinician's who are properly qualified undercover into the NSS's around the area for a mystery shop to highlight what they really do! Maybe then, consumers will actually get the point! I'll volunteer!

i will volunteer for the cheshire area. some ssalons give proper nail techs such a bad name nevermind the problems they create for clients

Me too for Peterborough we have 3 of them here:mad:

i doubt you will get anyone from here voulunteering themselves to put a bad image on the industry.

so why not drop the 'treatments from hell' and idea and focus on something more serious, positive and informative.

there is a huge issue at the moment with non standard salons, search the site for NSS or MMA you will find plenty. its not just an issue with nail salons, there are cowboys in every industry.

Hi there.

Many thanks for your posts.

We are looking for people who have had normal treatment for example eyelash tints and the results have been horrendous. They may have required medical treatment. Or perhaps you know someone who had a really bad wax or a chemical peel which has caused scarring.

please do keep all your thoughts coming.

As stated this is not watchdog and we are not pointing any fingers. This is a character led show and we are keen to meet people who would be happy to speak to us. This does not mean that they automaticallly be placed on TV. We are at this stage talking to people.

How about interviewing people who have had a nightmare experience at an NSS - e.g. an MMA nail taking their natural nail off with it, pain and damage to nail beds from excessive electric filing etc...

well like i said, i think the majoriy of us have far more respect for the industry to divulge the sort of stories you are after.

i would really look more towards the whole NSS thing, there is a minefield to be explored, some geeks here are now working with their local MPs to make a difference.

I am sure these kinds of "Beauty mishaps" only occur with untrained individuals and they are therefore not Beauty Therapists just rogue traiders. Beauty D.I.Y accidents would be more interesting, promoting the idea that waxing and ELT e.t.c are not the sorts of things that should be done at home without the help of a trained professional.

Yes, definitely. If the programme could expose untrained and unqualified people (who are most likely uninsured too) causing horrendous things to happen to people, then that could only be good for true salon professionals as it would demonstrate the difference between a reputable salon and "cowboys".

My thoughts are this - we are professionals and not consumers on this site and we focus on best practice so that the above scenarios are VERY unlikely to happen. If you would like to know about serious incidents then I suggest you ask the insurance companies.

Sophie, i doubt any professionals have had horrendous reactions to eyelash tints and peels as we all follow thoughout consultations and patch tests...and any that have had clients that have had reactions...aren't likely to come forward..

i know you say you aren't a watchdog, but as this is a professional forum, i seriously doubt you will get someone who is happy to tell you about hurting/blinding someone.. who would want to do that? in my personal opinion, i know i would be highly distraught if i had seriously hurt or harmed a client and it would haunt me for the rest of my life! why would i want that televised?

on a positive note sophie, maybe focus on as katelisa says dropping the 'treatments from hell' vibe, look into less serious beauty blunders...maybe for example, when beautician A waxed someones eyebrow off during training. or is the treatments from hell vibe what you want from your show? are you mainly looking for clients for there opinions?

sorry to go on about this or if i had offended anyone but i find show whole idea slightly baffling and i feel quite strongly about this as it would not give a good viewpoint of our industry. if anything, it would be great if the BBC could ADVERTISE our industry!

I'm guessing this is probably due to the success of programs like those about plastic surgery gone wrong? I would imagine all the horror stories there are from unlicensed surgeons or the problems are complications the client is aware could happen before they have the treatment.

A program about in salon beauty disasters would be scaremongering and put our industry in a negative light.

Maybe us geeks should petition and go to watchdog! They'd actually be interested in sorting out the issue as opposed to flaunting it over a ratings war.

The reference for the documentary is about the client side of tretaments. perhaps you have dealth with people who have told you their horror stories. Perhaps you have rectified their mishaps. I am hoping that you may be able to help make contact with such indicdulas. This is not in any way aimed at professionals who are excellent therapists.

Sophie

defo agree with the majority verdict on here, y would any trained beautuician want to stand up on tele and say i ballsed up?!! noone would come to you again. i think you are loking more towards clients stories, but again i think the NSS story would be beter as you would be exposing these nail bars for what they really are.

to add my penniesworth Sophie,

I think that you should be looking at beauty disasters caused by members of the public working on themselves, and cowboy/girls who have no qualifications and no experience. They may have burnt themselves on a tub of VEET that used to be heated in the micowave.

Better still, why not ask for Argos shoppers that have bought RIO products and tried to recreate professional looking nails with these kits.

An expose on NSS would be an excellent part of your programme.

Another excellent segment could be people that have "trained" with correspondence courses and set themselves up as "professionals". You could set up an interview with the correspondence course providers and get their take on it.

Then get in touch with the insurance companies.

But cowboys/girls wouldn't have insurance.

Just a few ideas for you.

The reference for the documentary is about the client side of treatments. perhaps you have dealt with people who have told you their horror stories. Perhaps you have rectified their mishaps. I am hoping that you may be able to help make contact with such individuals. This is not in any way aimed at professionals who are excellent therapists.

Sophie
I understand what you are saying but it is still aimed at therapists that have done a terrible job,
all of us on here are very passionate about what we do and train very hard to be as good as we can be so there is no way we are going to expose any therapist that may have done a bad job or caused a disaster because at the end of the day it is BAD PUBLICITY for the rest of us that are very careful about how we perform our treatments and spend small fortunes on top of the range award winning training,
also it is unprofessional to tell tales on other therapists and we are all better than that,
you have had some excellent ideas thrown your way for what would be a much better show and we would be more than happy to help you if it was a show about the untrained or the BIG problem of the NSS

If i, for one minute thought that the programme would deal with beauty therapy in an informative way that would actually put our industry in the light it actually deserves rather than the way we are all often perceived as thick, unqualified pink and fluffy and it actually targeted the people that give our industry a bad name i think we would all help, as said before if its just for pure entertainment value with no real message i dont think anyone of us will be prepared to offer much.
