Hi ive just read a post from cerries saying she has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and closing her salon!
i was told i had fibro last june and decided to go on a nail course to do this as a job, as love nails, people and your sat down.
im now worried that this isnt a good idea as cerrie has closed her salon due to the same illness as i have. ive tried to reply on the thread but its closed!
Does anyone else have this condition and working as a nail tech ???

I know nothing about the condition but i should think that like most other medical conditions it is very much an individual thing and you cannot and should not use others as a comparison only you will know what you are capable of now or in the future including the support around you

Hi,

I've pm'd you ..

Sarah

Cerries has also ME as well as Fibromyalgia. Like it was said before, different people different situations. How have you been coping so far? How has it changed for you for the worse? Do you find you are having problems working?
Be guided by your body and its responses and take it from there. Skeak to your doctor abput your concerns as he is the one that can give you the best info relating to your case..
In the mean time enjoy what your doing, just dont over do it xxx

Yes definately enjoy what you are doing. If things are tough and you can only manage 1 set of nails a week and you enjoy doing them thats good.Dont give up just do what you can do.

As the girls have said, there is no reason to base your own future on the decisions of others. Some people have illnesses that are more severe or chronic than others.

Everyone is different. If you feel fine and healthy, no reason to give something up. After all any one of one can be sick at any time.

Please try not to worry as anxiety is one of the worst thing for such illnesses.

Enjoy what you are doing but like we all should, take it easy when you can and dont push yourself to breaking point.

I have FM - was diagnosed 10 years ago and had to give up my full time job as a medical secretary. I trained to do nails 2 years ago as I was advised not to let it control me and whilst some days you have no choice I hated just sitting around when I felt ok so decided to retrain to do something and have only just started as a mobile nail tech but I can tailor what I do to how I feel. As you know you have good days and bad so do what you feel you can but make sure you have time for good quality rest.:)

I Have had M.E since 1997 and was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in march 2008.
I have meds to control the neuropathic pain that comes from fibromyalgia and as long as I take then religiously everyday then I can manage the disorder.
My M.E is something else that has taken me a long time to get a handle on. Ruth is right as long as you listen to your body and slow it down when you have a flare up there is no reason why you cant be successful, sadly Cerries was only diagnosed a few months ago and it does take it out of you at the start, takes a while for them to sort out the right pain meds etc.
Im living proof I have been running my business for 4 years now although it is a home based salon, I guess that does take some of the stress out for me.
As long as you have a supportive family and an excellent doctor and the right meds there is no reason why you cant succeed.

Hi

Yes I have it as well and have been doing nails but not that often. I love everything about nails and would never give it up for anything. Its the tiredness that has probably made her close her salon, some people are worse than others but I was always told dont give in to it, as you will get worse. I dont think that I could work loads of hours though, that would be hard. Hope that helps and dont give up. Ax

aww thank you all so much.
I find that when doing a massage it relaxes me at the same time:)
I love doing nails but got so much to learn still.
im taking my time so im not over doing it.:)

Hi all. Fairly new here. I too have fibromyalgia. I was diagnosed in 1994, 1 year after I became a nail tech. I had 2 small children at the time. I decided then and there I was not going to go to bed but was going to be a part of my kids lives. I did not work full time and would nap in the afternoon. My family understood. I do take anti inflammatory drugs every day and they do help. I have gotten better over the years and started going to the gym about 4 years ago. I try to go every day now and I feel it too has really helped. As others have said do what you can and remember everyone is different. Best of luck.

I have dealt with this almost my whole career in esthetics (28 yrs) but not diagnosed until the early 1990's. I find working part time as well as being an esthetician I do all sorts of services eg: facials, waxing, lash and brow dye, pedicures, natural nail manicures etc, etc. So with this mix it is easier on my body and hands as they are not constant repititious services. If I did nothing but nails, artificial or regular I would be in trouble as it would be too much of the same postion and movement for my body.

1 1/2 years ago I was in a bad car accident and had to take a bunch of time off work and then start back gradually but my long term customers who are like friends and family now totally understood and helped out where possible. They would carry my pedicure water for me or one of the hairdressers if they could not. Even a bowl of facial water I needed help with. This all was much appreciated by me and helps me be in the business for a long time I hope.

I am much better from that accident now but my customers tell me I can never retire as who would they then go to for their needs as they like the way I do things. So they help out a bit to keep me healthy and so I can do what I love and keep them happy. They call it their weekly therapy visits with me and say its cheaper than a therapist.

So for me I find I can work around fibromyalgia and still earn a good living. I am also married and a Mom so part time works with this. Doing Shellac nails has also helped me be very busy and earn a lot more as the end result is longer heathier nails without the hassle of artificial nails - the buffing and filling for similar looking results if not better in my opinion. My clients love it and it is not hard on my body. So this is my long and rambling story :) S.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to ask what were your symptoms and how did you get diagnosed?

My osteopath thinks I may have fibromyalgia, she suggested it when I very first went to her 12 months ago but we brushed it off. But I have been really fatigued lately, I literally wake up in the morning and need a nap. I have body ache and stiffness. And I generally feel like an 80 year old, I'm 27! :Scared:

I've also noticed I'm very sensitive to touch, especially my thighs. My bf only has to squeeze a tiny bit and it kills.

I will go and see my doctor next week, but I wondered if you were refferred to a specialist or if your doctor sorted you out?

Have a look at the following
http://www.ukfibromyalgia.com it may give you an insight. I hope this helps as I think you'll find a wealth of information on there. Gentle hugs x

Heya. Im saw a rhumeatologist (can't spell) to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia. He did a touch point test to diagnose me and looked at my symptoms.

It was very obvious i had it as my tell tale signs were chronic fatigue, stiffness, extreme anxiety ... But the fact my knees locked them selves and i was in dire pain and i couldn't walk without support was my big giveaway. Lol.

But he was very good and went on to refer me to a dietician, physiotherapist and for hydrotheraphy. It has made my knees stronger but i will always struggle to walk.

I have had so much care and support and it effects everybody in so many different ways so don't worry. My case is pretty bad and my flare ups are worse. But like i said you will find out how it effects you and you will be taught how to work with it.

The geeks in this thread tell many success stories and are an inspiration. But do check out that website... Was very helpful for me.. Good advice from the previous geek :)

Any questions you have you can pm me xx
