Hi fellow Geeks!

Just wondering if anyone out there speaks Spanish? What's the best way to learn for me and my husband? Go to college? Watch Dora and Go Diegi Go? Or are ther any books anyone can reccommend??

Any advice wil be greatfully received!! :green:

I haven't learned Spanish but have studied German, French and Flemish.
home learning courses with cd's are a good starting point along with a conversational course at the collage, especially if the teacher is Spanish, it will really help with pronunciation. Also tune your radio into a spanish station if possible. But honestly the best way to learn any language is to live in the country where it is spoken.

I agree, computer courses have helped me! I have been using one called 'Visual link Spanish', its great, and has deffinately helped me. Im moving to spain in July and want to know some basics and be able to get by, but I dont think anythings as good as being in Spain to pick up the language, Im hoping when we're there, we'll pick it up leaps and bounds! especially our 2 children.

Why do you want to learn Spanish? Are you moving?
There are quite a few geeks in Spain, sure they'll be along with some advise soon...... good luck!

This is one of the best cd's I've come across for learning another language. It will get you speaking the basic language in a very short space of time and you can use that to build on if you want to progress it further. Welcome to the Michel Thomas Website

Thanks Shelley, yes it is something we are thinking about, hence the wanting to learn the lingo!! It is just a thought in our heads at the moment, but a pretty deep one at that. So any other advice on moving there would be a plus for us!

Thanks again, Lainy. xxx

The Michel Thomas cd's are good and you can load them onto your iPod or listen to them in the car. xxx

That's great. Thanks geeks, I have ordered a free trial cd!!! xxx

Two years ago I went to college one morning a week for 21/2 years. Loved it and would recommend it. It was such good fun and you meet lots of people in the same boat.

Thanks Jayne, the only thing putting us off college is the length of time!!! xxx

I agree with the Michel thomas cds i too used them in the car although the only thing i can remember now is ''no es para usted es para mi''..which is ''its not for you its for me''..may come in handy one day:)

Those electronic translators help quite a bit when you are out there.

Michel Thomas is fab, but it's not advised to learn whilst driving, you need to be concentrating...
The best way IMO to learn SPanish is to go to local bars/restaurants etc and pick it up from the locals, it's done me proud and although I'm not fluent I can get by quite well, mostly by mixing with the locals in our town!!!

The local language is Valenciano, but you don't need to speak it, we don't.
Catalan is spoken further north, towards Barcelona.

Do you have a local comunity centre that offers free courses?

I was just looking last week at enrolling on a course at my local comunity centre, they do spanish, latin, nail art, salsa, line dancing, computers....and more, they also have a crech(sp) so i will be able to take the little fella and know hes having quality play time while my brain is getting quality stimulation.

Worth looking into...some get courses free if on benefits but you can pay to enroll also. HTH

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your comments! My free Michel Thomas cd arrived, and it's brill! I have now ordered the full introduction course on e-bay at a bargain price! He're's a bit of what I've learnt so far! (Probably spelt wrong!)

Por que no es aceptable para usted asi?

He he he...it's great!!! :green:

Doing good chica :D

One little tip, Michel Tomas uses 'usted' a lot, however, when you're pottering along with daily life in Spain it gets used quite rarely, we tend to be quite informal unless you're speaking to someone of 'standing' (which we don't lol) or being formal, we use 'para ti' instead :D

Primsula cds are good. I know you want to learn Spanish but I have it in Thai and keep up my vocab by listening to them everyday.

I learnt to speak Thai in Thailand by the locals something I never want to forget. A hard language but good for me as we will be moving to Thailand eventually.

Sawadee Ka....

Actually my Thai is better than my English
