A low GI diet is good for pcos but again exersise is key. And where possible, try not to have too much sugar intake. Do you have regular cycles? A friend of mine has recently started on metaformin which is suppose to aid weightloss and regulate her cycle. Xx

Like Anscutin said, low carbs and exercise.

I went to a nutritionist and ask what kind of diet would be best for my PCOS and she said anything like the low G I diets. She said the GI diet is what all PCOS sufferers whould do, but now it's got a fancy name!

I found lists of low GI food and recipes on various websites and did 3 lots of 30 minutes fast walking every week and the weight came off pretty quickly, along with the side-effect symptoms (and I got pregnant).

I know that we are all on our feet all day but it's not the same as raising your heartrate doing actual exercise.

Gotta start that routine again myself!

You may not like this buuuut...

Eat less move more.
I hear you all cry I try, I try, I do, I do.. but you don't. You THINK you do  I was the same as you all. I had this, I had that - I was FAT! And depressed and trying to have a baby whilst all doctors were telling me to lose it And running a very busy and successful salon!
I stopped lying to myself. If I really was eating 1200 cals strictly for a year without losing weight then Dr Christian would've been round my place like a shot to see this FREAK of nature! I'm not, I was deluding myself!

I took some time out. Realised I would never get pregnant like this and started to run, just a little one less than a mile at first. I cried on my pathetic walk, jog, run, walk but I did it each morning at 5am so no one could see this big fat lump with snot running down my face. I put the effort in without dieting and guess what - I lost weight. after losing 10lbs the thought of eating high fat repulsed me... I lost a stone. My Dr/consultant/specialist (I have it BAD) were delighted. I decided to diet or lets say change my eating habits. One thing thats overlooked in diets is repetition. I've done soo many I don't know what works but WW certainly didn't work for me as I can't add. I decided to eat pretty much the same thing mon-fri - why? no counting, no fuss, no muss, then weekends to drink and splurge also this way no one would know and try to sabotage me.
I needed food that would fill me for the longest and work with the PCOS and Diabetes  Oats are king in my house so Porridge became my breakfast of choice for the last three years (yes 3 yrs) next is lunch - well its up to you but oily fish works for me, oily fish on ... oatcakes! Dinner is white fish or chicken and greens.
 The only reason you face is like this is because you don't want to try it or give up the crap!

I've lost 5 stone. I do not eat like this all the time but maybe for three months then a break so I can maintain the weight. I run at least 3 times a week (its free and fast) My favourite food is cake always has been. The acne is better - not completely gone but no hard postules. No diabetes, No pain - well almost.... No baby.... yet.

Sorry for the long post but I was a fat nail tech, moaning, moaning, moaning, busy, busy, busy, eating, eating, eating! Now I am still as busy if not busier but I'm happy, happy, happy!

Remember - Eat less move your legs more!

The diet always comes first with me to be honest, I've lost a stone and a half at weight watchers so far, I've a long way to go and to be honest I'm just too lazy to exercise at the moment, I'm not saying the weight hasn't came off anyway but it just irritates me that it takes twice as long when you have PCOS.

Oooo can't get in on that link! What is the book? X

I cant get on the link either

Hi, I was diagnosed with pcos 16 years ago, my gp started me on metformin which will regulate the way your body deals with insulin and kick start the weight loss, then it's diet and exercise, I had to shift 6 stone, it's a daily constant battle to stay in my healthy weight bracket and I still take metformin three times daily 17 years on to keep side effects under control, it is worth talking to your gp about treatments available

PCOS Diet Book: How you can use the nutritional approach to deal with polycystic ovary syndrome - I just ordered it from amazon :)

I have just found out aswell and have nearly 6 stone to loose. My weight should be between 6.5-8.7 stone because I am small :-( so I have a long journey ahead of me luckily Im not planning on having kids in the next couple of years. The doc recommends I should aim for up to half a stone a month

I've always been overweight and put it down to 'the fat gene' as most of my family are overweight too, then was diagnosed with pcos at 15,
Since then I've tried every diet class and club and only lost up to a stone then stopped...even put weight on with some!! Red days on slimming world or a High protein and low carb diet with exercise is all that helps xxx

I am thi king of joining weight watchers next week to start

Have you asked for metformin? X

You need to look at low gylcemic load foods which works out how much insulin it takes to break down foods, basically anything with gylcemic load of 8-10 or less is good (NOT low GI as this is now out of date, a food with low GI may not necessarily be low on the Glycemin load) this helps with insulin resistance that is caused by PCOS.

Along with above diet (also high protein), regular exercise and Metformin works really well for me to combat PCOS, it is a lifestyle change you have to make.

A couple of good food suggestions - lizi's granola (apple n cinnamon yummy! can be bought on amazon) with plain yoghurt, scrambled eggs are perfect low GL food there's loads of info if u google :)

Hope the above helps!
