But as a Nail Technician, I am duty bound to try and do something about UGLY NAILS. There is nothing attractive about this flared look, nothing "enhancing", in fact it makes the nails looks quite amateur, they look like an "attempt" at nails, minus some much needed skills.

My students are awesome at nails like these, but it's usually on the 1st nail model day. I should add they are a little, ok, a lot thicker too..but good grief, it's their first attempt!

Maybe it does require some skill (I don't care), I'd never attempt this look, as I would be ashamed that people would associate that work with my salon. One set of those shovel nails on the street and it would drive 6 potential clients away.

The skill would be in getting a client to sit long enough to apply and perfect or finish them out.
Let the Americans walk around with this look, while the rest of the world giggles.
are you kidding?? I can't say I've never worn an ehancement like those, its just been 20 or so years ago...when I first started.
I'll stick with doing beautiful work and continue my quest to make the artificial look real.

The title of this thread "UGLY DUCKS" is quite apt,
now give me a file and let me transform those ugly duck flares into beautiful swans, because that's what that look makes me wanna do.

I can appreciate the time and effort they took, the creative use of color and art, but there is NO WAY I'll be wearing them. If I could get ahold of them and a nice abrasive, just trim those sides a little, they'd be ok.

We did think of one good use, they would make excellent replacement oars for a life raft....very pretty ones I might add!

not my cup of t tbh, i think they look like they need filing !

Sorry That You All Hate The Way I Wear My Nails But Its
What I Like My Nails Are Flare But Not That Flare There Is A Limit
To How I Wear My Nails I Love Putting Nail Art On My Nails So A Little Flare And I Can Put A Little More Nail Art
My Nails Are Never P&w They Are Always Nail Arty Wild

Thank You All For Telling The Truth

Hey Wild, i have to agree with most comments on here, i just don't like the flared look, but have to say i loved the hearts and glitters used on the tips, as i am an arty girl and love anything that takes me away from french. I do have a lot of clients who ask for french, but now tend to have colours as i always wear different colours.

Never been asked for flared, and if i was would advise against it, especially for a client who has big fingers as i feel this would make them look worse. We all have different likes and dislikes when it comes to shape, and when you have been taught to produce natural style nails, these flared go right against the grain. If you like them, that's no problem Hun, i have seen some that do look better than others and not just been done by an inexperienced tech that has said they are the latest thing, so they can look reasonable.

Each to their own, and if you are happy, then that's what counts.:)

no doubt. i thought the work/art was fabulous. i just dont like the flared part of it.
however, with the size of the rock that one was sporting, she couldve been wearing tampon applicators on her nails and i never would have noticed. i LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOOVE jewelry, esp like that:green:

whats a chav or chaf or whatever that someone mentioned about someones wives were wearing? (did anyone follow that lol?)

oh and i forgot to mention: the gang members didnt use their 4" flares for weapons. they used guns and switchblades. um yeah... personally i think my new stiletto toenail trend im gonna start will make fantastic weapons heehee

CHAV is word used in the UK (think it stands for Council House and Violent but not sure). For you Yanks, Trailor Trash would fit the bill! Hope this helps!:)

No one hates You babe ... but I think of these nails kind of like those shoes called CROCS?

Lord they are just about the ugliest shoes ever created by man YET almost everyone in the world has convinced themselves that are cooler than cool and many now have 2-3 pairs in different colours.

I don't care how comfortable people tell me they are or how fashionable, there is no getting round it that there is no woman in the world whose feet look pretty in them.

I feel the same way about flares .. nail art or no nail art, no ones hands look pretty with this shape. In fact they sort of look like those CROCS ... maybe that is what inspired them!! It's like .. hey, lets think up something really ugly for a joke and then convince the world that its pretty!!! I'm not convinced.

Carl .. your comments were worth waiting for ... as always. :)

I so agree with you Geeg about crocs, they are UUUGGGGLLLLYYYY!!!!!!!

I will never ever get a pair of those.

Not exactly practical IMO.

Living in Canada, styles are much the same as the US. I haven't seen this 'flare' on TV or in person. I do see a lot of fake/porn style French nails on television though, particularly on reality shows.

To me this flare looks just seems to be an extension of an already fake looking style. I don't get them at all!

I do think that in general, us North Americans are a little slower to value a more natural enhancement, but I think it is moving that way. We're always behind the UK in terms of style. We'll catch up!

Well the UK is pretty far behind some European countries when it comes to style!! Here in Spain, the SPANISH women like LONG nail beds and tiny whites and they look gorgeous. Custom blend was made for them AND they come in every 2 weeks on the dot because they want them absolutely perfect all the time. They hardly give them a chance to grow before they are back in the seat to get them re-done ... this is very cool for business.

Now the German ladies will stretch a rebalance for as long as they can and complain if their nails do not last about 8 weeks!!

Most of the UK tourists' nails still favour the PORN Star look.

None of this lot wear nail art. I keep looking at every airport and bar in town and I never see all this nail art that the British techs tell me they do ALL THE TIME. Who do they do it on??

SPOT ON

I would say a third of my clients have nail art, be it subtle, and another third have a coloured or glitter french of some kind. The rest are either french or natural with polish.

I won't ever do those fan nails, no matter if someone says its the fashion.

ok now crocs r gross i dont no any one in this town that wears
them no way they r uuuuuuggggglllllyyyy

I thank my lucky stars if anyone request nail art as most of them want the french look. Most of them say its due to work and are not allowed designs!! My family and friends let me loose on them though to try new designs and I always have my trusty nail trainer. As for Flares... I just dont like em, my first ever set of nail looked nicer I think.

No offense meant to you at all hun.
I certainly don't hate you and am glad of your input in the thread:hug:

UGH why would some one want these they look like a tool and don't even get me started about crocks!!!! I know there are many different styles but they I don't know they just look wrong. as well as crocks are wrong

Just to start, I'm not being offensive, this is just an example:

If I was to see and ugly person, it would be duly noted (it's just an observation), I would keep my opinion to myself and sympathise (not everyone can be beautiful).

Although if I were a beauty therapist I'm sure I would love to make their skin look better, the hairy, less hairy. If I was a hairdresser, I'd love to make the bad haircut better, so on and so forth. Merely to try and make the best of a situation or look, anything would be an improvement on nothing. In other words, "I'd like to HELP THEM", in a discreet, gentle fashion.

From here on in you can take what I say however you like:)

Sure it's a look, but what kind of look?

Is this look some kind of test to see how gullible Nail Technicians are?

If some fashion magazine told you that warts in the middle of your forehead were fashionable, would you run out and rub a toad between your eyes?

Surely as professionals beautifying nails, we should put this trend on the backburner where it belongs, cause there ain't nuthin beautiful about this look, (perhaps Vicky Pollard may make it fashionable).

I may be in Australia, but I do know what "Chav" is. That disgusting look of nails in Footballers Wives was one thing, but these "flares" are quite a step backwards again and have the potential to set the industry credibility back many years.

Let the Americans walk around with this look, while the rest of the world giggles.

I'll stick with doing beautiful work and continue my quest to make the artificial look real.

I'll leave the "Ducks" up to the "Geese", or is that "Sheep"?
