Facial Sponges VS Facial Cloths

Hi all, I'm new here posting from Brisbane, Australia! So thrilled to have found a platform for beauty pros, this is really owesome!

I'm about to start a new business alongside my husband who's a hairstylist, I'll have a beauty room where I'll be providing facials and probably waxing, still deciding. I'm not too into waxing as not very experienced, but probably can't get away from doing facial waxing at the very least. I've found a lot of useful info re: waxing here which is excellent!

Sorry going off topic here, my question is; seems as though a lot of beauty therapists these days are opting to use facial cloths rather than sponges, is it a better alternative, and what is the comfort factor for the client? I've always used sponges but have lately noticed a lot of promotions and adverts on facial cloths. Any suggestions, advice or feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I personally don't know of any salons local to me who use facial cloths - do you mean those one impregnated with cleanser or is it a type of flannel? I use sponges to remove the cleanser, deep cleanser & exfoliator, cotton wool to apply toner & hot towels to remove the facial mask.

I can't say I know of any salon around mine that use facial cloths. I have always used facial sponges and whenever I have had a facial myself they have used sponges. HTH xx

I cannot recall any salons that I know using facial clothes unless you mean the toweling facial clothes.


Most of the salons I know use facial sponges to remove products or damp cotton wool pads.

I use the damp cotton wool pads due to time, facial sponges need to be cleaned after every client for hygiene reasons. The cotton pads are quick and disposable and I think softer on the skin.

To remove masks, ect I use hot mitts from the towel caddy, I find it helps to loosen the mask and it becomes easy to remove. (make sure they dont get to hot though) and certain clients with broken capillaries ect I tend not to use them.

Hi there. I use fibrellas (facial cloths) in all my facials. They're easy to use and as they're disposable it is a lot more hygenic for the client. I actually tear the towel in half, fold it in quarters and use just like sponges. Too easy.

I use facial cloths and my clients love them! I use a towel steamer to keep them nice and warm, and infuse with essential oil. I like using facial cloths as i can put them on a boil wash to make sure they are clean. I do get through loads in a day, i admit, but they are not too expensive to buy so i make sure i have plenty. Its a realy nice way to start a facial aswell as I gently lay a couple of hot cloths around the face to warm the clients skin, they all say its a really nice start to their facial. hth xx

I use sponges but favour hot mitts. You can buy them or make them out of towelling.

Just make little square pockets that you can get your hands in comfortably. I like them because they are easy to control and you can boil wash them for hygiene.

If you preheat them in a towel warmer(or soak them in hot water) just before you remove product from the face it is a lovely, warming sensation for the client x

Thanks for all your feedback, actually yes I was referring to the Fibrellas, sorry for not being specific, couldn't think of the name before. I guess I'll have to give it a go myself to see if I'm any good at using them, as they do seem to be quite popular here down under. I think depending on the comfort factor for the client as well, as sometimes wiping over and over with sponges may not always be pleasant but we've been using it for years so can't complain.

I prefer towelling cloths. I find them alot more pleasent when having a facial myself and think they are more effecient when removing product. Everybody has their own preferences though, so for the cost of a few sponges, a box of fibrella wipes, and a couple of cloths, it really is worth trying them all and seeing what you like.

Do you mean the muslin cloths or the towelling mits?

I think that either of these are much better than sponges and they gently exfoliate the skin and get the blood pumping.

Also, they can be boil washed so you know they're ultra clean. Really cheap too. xxx

I always use warm flannels out of a towel warmer. I use them for removal of all facial products and for removal of products during manicures and pedicures. My clients prefer this to sponges.

Would i still be ok to use these fibrellas without a towel steamer/heater? (i dont have one at my salon and cant justify buying one just yet)

Would i be able to immerse them in hot water or something similar instead?

Not sure if you have them in Oz, but a great geek tip is to use a slow cooker to heat your towels and they are a fraction of the price of a towel warmer ... wish I'd known that before I'd bought my warmer I can tell you! I also use hot towels at the end of a nail treatment for the clients - they call it their "curry house towels" but they love them as it really refreshes the hands and gets off all the dust (although not at the mo as it's too hot here in Spain right now)

Sure do, that's what I use..........paid about $50 for it.
