It is good if they phone and tell us what they have to offer and how will we benefit from using/buying from them and not someone else.

The problem is that if you say you are not interested they still going to call you again, that is annoying.

What's *really* annoying is when the same sales company calls your mobile - persistently - say twice a day for several days in a row - and you know it's them, because the phone keeps flashing up their number. At least you can press the button to not answer the call though - which I guess is better than if it was a landline with no caller ID...

Hmmm, I sympathise with what your all saying but in the days when I was at college I did this job part-time and being on the receiving end of unnecessary abuse isn't pleasant, afterall, they are only doing their job. So, I say be nice, it doesn't take that much more effort xx

I'm usually quite polite and professional, listen for a second and if I'm not interested I just say so. If people accept that and disappear then great, if not I just tell them they have 10 seconds to end the call politely before I hang up. Its the pushy 'won't take no for an answer' ones that get me a bit annoyed!

But....I do occasionally get a wicked streak in me...usually after I've been bombarded a bit, and play them at their own game. I'm never rude, I just do one of these two things....

1/ When they ask how you are (they always do!), say something like "I'm glad you asked, because I'm really not well!" Then wax lyrical for the next 3 minutes on how you have every ailment under the sun and how its really getting you down and the dotor tells you you have a kind of psycosis that means you totally fixate on telling everyone in real detail all about your problems and can't seem to let it drop and ........before you know it, they'll have gone!

2/ Or just politely ask them for their own home number so you can ring them that evening and try and sell them home insulatiopn or glazing or something...anything....just make sure its something they really won't want to hear about! It really throws them off their stride!

lol, thats hilarious!

They are the bane of my life, they never seem to stop phoning. I now find myself referring to myself in the third person, "sorry Martin isn't in today", I'm starting to develop a split personality!
Excellent reply, I hadn't thought of doing that, must try that one next time!
Usually I say I'm in the middle of a facial/wax/tanning trt, so send me the info in the post.

I always say I'm not interested and politely hang up. I try to be friendly but when you've just sat down to have your tea or got to the crucial bit in a film its really annoying. I really hate junk mail cos I hate to think of all the trees that have been cut down, and yes I do recycle.

BUT what I really hate is the amount of bin liners shoved through your letter box (at least 4 or 5 where I live) asking for unwanted clothes etc. I mean how many do they think we have. Its such a nuisance cos in my case the dogs go barmy and use it as a toy, imagine 4 dogs trying to get it, madhouse lol

I try to remember that they are just doing their job.i am always polite (kamah) and just say thanks for the call, but I am happy with my current supplier.i have received some very good deals in the past so its alwyas good to listen. you can listen while your work takes only a few minutes and you may just recieve a great deal.caron(wax company here)always call to see if i need anything which is great as i am often so busy and can forget to place orders.

I used to work in Telesales, I was paid on Commission so not actually paid to take abuse, so made me sad when people got abusive lol

I hate those calls myself too! I generally say "I'm sorry, but I'm not interested" once I've heard them out.

I get at least 6 of these calls every day and I used to do it the polite way and say 'thank you for calling but,no thank you'' and having to justify why I was saying 'no' (some of these sales ppl are very persitent).I ask to be taken off their lists but it never hapens.
Now I just switch into answer phone mode complete with malfunction and confuse them ( my beep can last a long time and can be very intermitent:lol:).
My clients think it's funny at least.

everyone needs a job and these people are only doing theres its like traffic wardens everyone moans about them but the fact is if they were parked where they should be and not where they shouldnt they would never have a problem !! i just either stop them befor they go on and say sorry im not interested or say i'll have it if its free!! teehee.... im saying all that but i once poked a traffic warden with my umberella haha cause he booked me for being 10mins over i was heavily prgnant at the time he could see me waddling up shouting at the top of my voice and he carried on doing the ticket uwwwwwww i wasnt happy that day!!!

If I receive a call from a company I don't recognise but they ask for me by name, I say "I'm sorry, she's not available at the moment. Can I ask what it is regarding and I will get her to call you back." Then I don't!

I once received a call from BT asking if I wished to renew my business broadband package with them and and I said "No". The guy asked why and I said "Because I think the service is pants". Then HE hung up!

What annoys me more (and I apologise if I am repeating what someone else has written because I've only read the first couple of messages) is getting a call 10 TIMES IN ONE DAY where all it is is some beeping and then the line goes dead.

Aaaarrrggghhh!!!

I personally hang up and dont even speak to them. I have no time for any of them!

My little brother on the other hand... he once had a bit of a laugh with one salesperson and just spoke the biggest load of nonsense to them. He asked them personal questions and invited him to a family barbeque! In the end it was the sales person who hung up on him!!

I disagree with a lot of comments on this thread,

It's really nothing like traffic wardens, if I break the law and park somewhere I shouldn't I would not be annoyed if I get a ticket. If I am home minding my own business and am being called at 7,8,9pm at night I am not happy.

I wouldn't dream of doing a job like that!! I certainly am not nice to them. I came home from work one day to find my mum really upset as an overseas company kept calling regarding her "orange mobile phone" (trying to get business as she doesn't have one) even though she was very nice and said no thanks they kept calling straight back harassing her and I'm afraid they got a very abusive mouth full from me (F word and everything) I did warn them when I answered the 1st time not to call again and 30 mins later they called demanding to speak to my mum.

I am sorry but these people are scumbags in my opinion, what about the older generation living alone who are receiving these calls?? Who cares if its a hard job?!! I have no sympathy I'm afraid after some of the calls we have had.

I 100% agree. Beside they are just normal people like us doing their jobs. I don't like when people are rude.:irked: Of cause I understand it can be annoying, butit is nice to be nice to others
I'm sure that some time in the past youselfs had to do some promotions, like handing out your price lists and etc. And surely some people could have found it annoying too.

hmm, I've kind of changed my opinions about sales calls recently. I used to be the same as a lot of others, absolutely wouldnt listent to them and hung up, but recently a couple of cavassing calls have led to something beneficial for my business. For example, I wanted to offer card payment facilities but the cost of the streamline terminal was too much. A company rang who specialise in offering this service to small businesses, and they have provided me with a terminal far cheaper than the banks could offer with no set up fee. Now, I give the caller a few seconds to say why they'e ringing, if its of no interest I get rid of them with a quick "not interested". The ones that particularly annoy me are the ones that try to get chatty and friendly with you before they get to the point of why they're ringing, I get very impatient with those people and tell them to get to the point.

Thats business calls though. personal sales calls are a different matter. Those people really can get quite rude and I have no sympathies for the crap that they get. Sure they're just trying to earn a living, but they dont have to be so rude and pushy. I know a lot of them are told to act like that, but just because someone is paying you doesnt make it right to treat people in a way you wouldnt like to be treated yourself. If these people are pushy and rude to me I have no problems being pushy and rude in return.

A couple of years ago we were having lunch when there was a knock on the door, it was a bloke claiming to need some details of our gas bill etc to make sure we were on the right tarriff. He was very clearly from a canvassing company and was using dodgy tactics to get us to change suppliers so my husband told him to drop the act, we dont want to change suppliers, and the bloke started to get lippy so my husband shut the door in his face. He came back to the table and this bloke knocked on the door again! My husband went to answer it and the sales bloke was basically offering him a fight!! That bloke is so lucky that my kids were in the house which is the only thing that stopped my husband kicking his backside down the street, he's a 6th dan black belt and runs a martial arts school!! It still amazes me to this day though that after he had the door slammed in his face he just carried on as normal working his way up the street going door to door as if it was a normal everyday occurrence!
