my last client was a man that booked by phone this morning for a male manicure, no problems for me or so i thought,
he arrived at 5.30 he was about 65 to 70 yrs old, and he smelt kind of funny shall we say, i had a quick look at his hands and asked what he actually wanted out of the service,
he said take the length down and file etc, no probs i thought , and i started to get this smell more from near his hands rather than him, went to set up a soaking bowl with citrisoak and hoping that this would clean his hands enough for me to touch them!!!then i noticed his little finger was missing! no probs again ( im a professional and these things are common)
his nails were very long as i took his hand in mine to start at his little finger he started to stroke my hand with his thumb!!!!

i moved away , thinking it could have been a mistake, tried to carry on, and to engage him in conversation, but he kept grunting under his breath," gorgeous, and things like ummm lovely"
was he on about me or my technique!
i had to clean under his nails as they were really dirty and this is where the smell was coming from, i normally have a strong stomache, but this was what i felt was beyond the call of duty,
needless to say i started to feel very uncomfortable, and wanted to finish the service half done, he then tried to rub his feet against mine!!!
thats when i quickly finished up, i then asked another girl to take his money for me as i had to clean up as we had finished for the day,
i went out the back and was heaving into the sink, i still dont know what the smell was, but he made me feel so bad , i threw my files away and told the girl to keep his tip as i didnt want it from him!
i came home and cried!
this is not like me atall, but now i feel so yucky, i dont want to do any men atall now,
i have been home an hour and a half now, and i still cant get it out of my head,
have any of you had to do something like this, or put up with dirty old men if so what did you do, or what would you have done in my position?

how is it possible, to actually refuse service with no good reason???

please help me, shall i just say no more men, or what,??
sorry its long and waffly, but i feel a bit funny still and am tearful,
dont know why its got to me so much but it has sorry x

OMG I think you did the best you could in this situation. Maybe you were just unlucky this time. to you. DON'T let him book in with you again though.

Ah hun sorry you had to experience this kind of behavior its a tough one when it comes to issues like this we have to be so tactfull, I would had just said I feel faint to get myself out of the situation.

   Oh my word!! Nikki that is just awful. You should have stopped point blank and asked him to stop whatevr he was doing. He was acting highly inappropriately. The other staff would have undertood. If he continued then it would have been time to refuse to carry on the treatment. Usually, whn I feel this way around a male client I just make sure that I am not alone in the salon and that the door is always left ajar. Do you have a seperate room where you work?

Poor you. Think you were just unlucky and got a strange one, don't let it put you off other men as clients. On the funny side at least you only had to clean out 9 skanky nails ... and at least he didn't want a back, sack and crack!!! (just trying to make you laugh hun! ) Learn from this so that you're prepared if it happens again and how you would stop them in their tracks ... and you can refuse this man another time.

It reminds me of a great tale told to me by one of the clients in the hair salon I used to work in. About 20 years ago she used to go to this salon and there was a stylist fresh out of college. They'd taught them at colege that men can get a bit frisky and to be ready for it. Well she "gowned this man up" and then he proceeded to make rather lewd movements under the gown. Horrified at what she imagined him to be doing under there she whacked him round the head with a hair dryer!!!!!!!!! Imagine the look on both their faces when she pulled back the gown .... and he was just cleaning his glasses!!!!!!!

 It's all part of our ever increasing learning experience on how to deal with clients. Tomorrow is a new day

Oh no hun, that is awful!!!

A big hug is on it's way to you  hope you feel better soon!!!

oh Niki, thats terrible, i have been through this myself, but i couldn't sit in front of him no longer and i told him to leave without paying. some smelly dirty old men, (even young ones) get a kick out of making women feel uncomfortable. they are preverted B*****ds and have put me off giving male clients manicures. the only males i do is clients partners and gay men!

if he calls again to make an appointment, either tell him straight or if you cant bring yourself to tell him, your appointment book is fully booked!!!
hope you feel better hun, just don't let him get to you, thats what he wanted to acheive.

If it's any consolation I once did a pedi at sheltered accomodation and the guy stripped to the waist and said "Where do you want me?"
Bless, he was about 80 and thought I was the hairdresser.
Scared me half to death but hope it's cheered you up a bit.

That's awful....it's madness what goes on in our localities...., try and forget about it....easier said than done. Hope you feel better soon. xxx

How bl**dy horrible for you :(

I really don't know what I would have done in your position.. it must have been very difficult for you to continue .. well done for being so professional.

Having time to think about it now .. I think if he made me feel so uncomfortable then I would say to him .. the treatment he was getting is a professional salon treatment and as a professional beautician I find your comments and actions totally un-appropriate, I would prefer that you stop immediately or the treatment will be ceased.

I just don't know... its easy when you are not on the spot sigh!!!

Don't let it spoil the rest of your day Nikki.. think of all the nice clients you get on a daily basis and this is hopefully a one off..:hug:

 huge hugs sweetheart, I don't have any advice as i've never been unfortunate enough to have been put in that situation. It's perfectly understandable why he made you feel that way, you feel violated mate.
chat to you later on xxx

....What a nightmare client......I am sure you will feel better tomorrow...and put this behind you.....Good advie from your fellow geeks...esp Sassy with the hairdryer...hope that put a smile back on your face.

I'm not surprised you cant this out of your head,I would be exactly the same, however thankfully most men are normal,he was just the minority.I have many men clients and I have never had any problems(fingers crossed that I never will)A few years ago one of the therapists I knew told me a story about this guy she was massaging. She was busy massaging his back when she noticed his body going up and down. She tried to ignore it but he was moving up and down as though he were having sex with the couch:eek: :eek:Anyway she stopped what she was doing and demanded he got dressed and leave the salon immediately. He was mortified and apologised repeatedly but she wasn't having any of it.She said that he hung his head in shame as he paid up and she never saw him again, good riddence to bad rubish.Anyway that aside, just put it down to another experience that hopefully you wont have to have again.Try not to think about it:hug:

Ahhh poor you its horrible, had something similar happen to me before but no-where near as bad.

When i used to work at the spa a guy in his eightys booked in for a full body massage (guess who's coloumn he was in) anyway treatment went fine no problems or so i thought.

About two hours later when id finished for the day i got filled in on the daily goss as usual, turns out after his massage he'd gone down to the pool and sat on one of the loungers reading pornos
This was while theres kids in the pool, one of the parents must of noticed and let reception know so the manager told him to leave immediatley.
He was in the changing room toilets for at least 30 mins after before he left as one of the leisure guys went to check what the hell he was doing !
Anyway thought id seen the last of him until he joined the beauty club, why they allowed him i don't know & booked in with me for a hot stone massage, well i hit the roof and nearly left over it but in the end another therapist offered to do it and lets just say he was very suggestive in the treatment.

I won't do men now unless its someone i know.

eeek god nikki thats bad.

I hope your feeling a bit better now.

i have no prob with doing male manicures but blokes perving off on it is ANOTHER MATTER ENTIRELY:eek:

 hugs babes:hug:

right im back ive showered and feel better!!!
still cant believe it really!!!
sass you did make me smile thankyou!!! and also thanks to everybody for their messages,
also to point out, this treatment was carried out in the nail area in a hair salon, so we were not alone!!
its annoyed me now, that i allowed it to upset me soo much, like you said tomorrows another day , but i certainly have his card marked!!,
i think it would have been very difficult to cut short the service with out making a big scene, i dont know if i could have asked him to leave without giving a full and frank reasoning why!

IMO you could and should have given a frank and true reason why...it was there in your face, not your imagination.

you sound like u did very well hun, sending u lots of hugs and hope your feeling better soon     xx

I'm so sorry this has happened to you. I have been put in uncomfortable situations with sexual suggestions and requests twice, once during an old male's facial and once doing a young male's massage. The younger guy appogised perfusely when I told him his behaviour was not appropriate but must admit I carried on with the treatment (missing out large areas of his body though). He never tried to book again if he had I would have the guts to put him straight. At the time though I was slightly lost for words.

The man you did the manicure on knew full well what he was doing but counted on the intimidation/power of the situation he was in to feel confident enough to do this to you. You should not feel bad, you handled the situation professionally and in the best way you could at the time. If this happens again with another client do not be afraid to say "I feel uncomfortable doing your treatment, I will get my manager to come and speak to you" :) If he rings the salon or comes in for another appointment then the person taking the booking should explain exactly why he will not be booked in so he can understand that his behaviour is not acceptable.

Please do not doubt yourself, it shows how lovely you must be that this has upset you so much and you were worried about not doing this perverts full treatment

:)
