Helloooo...Well I'm really new to this, only made it today so I'm not even sure if I'm posting in the right section!!

Anyway...
Im training to become a Beauty Therapist, I know this will sound pathetic to some people but I can kinda tolerate doing my friends & families feet but I am soon to start performing pedicures on paying strangers in my commercial salon day at college!!!
Argh. :suprised:
I dont mind touching the feet at all (massaging/exfoliation etc) its when I have to do the cutting/filing & cuticle work.
Even after going over with antiseptic andddd soaking.....the toenails still make me feel sick.

I know I'm gonna have to come to terms with strangers feeeeet :|
But I was wondering if anyone had any handy tips to help!

Thankssss..!

Hi, welcome to the site. It is brilliant and people are really helpful.
I did a Spa pedicure course not long ago and what they told me was that just think what you do with your feet compared to your hands. Feet - you get up have shower and put them in clean socks, That doesnt sound too bad. Hands - you have shower, go to toilet, change nappies (thats what i spend most of my day doing), cleaning bathrooms and toilets and so on.

Hope this helps x

You're just gonna have to get passed it. Because next to nail enhancements.. pedicures are one of the biggest forms of income in this business. I have clients that would never get their nails done, but religiously come every month to get their feet done. But, one day it might get to the point in your career where you don't have to do feet. My mentor is like that now. She rarely does them anymore because she's so busy with enhancements. But you gotta pay your dues.

I hope you get thru it! Because it's worth it in the end. Good luck!

I was exactly the same! Hated feet, didnt matter who's they were , i hated them.
I think it is different when your earning money from it you tend to overcome it. In my commercial salon at college I had a boy come in that was mentally disabled and had to do a pedi on him. It wasnt the nicest experience but after that i just thought sod it I have to get on with it. Generally people coming for pedicures do look after their feet so they are really not that bad. I am now going on to do reflexology!
Stick with it hun i'm sure once you get used to it it will be a doddle

I'm with you Becki I too hate feet, have just finished a manicure course and I'm gonna see how I get on, see how many requests I get for pedicures before I go ahead and do the Pedicure course.

I really hate feet!!! But if it's gonna make me money I'm gonna have to get over it. Somehow.... aghhhhhhhhh.

Thanks Everyone!!

Im moving on to facials next week, I cant wait!! :green:

But soo many people are wanting pedicures in commercial salon!
Its bound to be my turn in the next few weeks!
Il just have to get on with it..once I've done a few it shouldn't be as bad ;)
(I HOPE!!)

you are not alone, i didnt train in pedicure for the same reasons. But I have had so many people asking for them that I have now booked myself onto a course and Im gonna have to 'face my fear' !! I am trying to focus on what it will bring to my business and hoping that will outweigh everything else about feet.

Just keep telling yourself you need this qualification because...
in summer this will be the biggest money maker ££££££££££

Not only through the summer! I hav many regulars who come all year, once a month, without fail. Because I tell them tht after all our hard work through the summer.isn't it a shame to hide and ignore them in the winter? Also making it harder work for me to return their feet to the beauties we have created!!
Those clients can't live without you!!!

If it helps you could wear gloves while you do it.

My first pedicure on a client was a Bridal Party Granny of the Bride. Her feet, although she had been going regularly to a chiropodist weren't the best! Her cuticles had grown almost all the way down her nails and the nails were all sorts of odd shapes. I just got on with it and started chatting to her. She wa a lovely lady and really enjoyed her treat. I think you just need to try to take your mind off it, but not so much that you don't do a great job!

Thanks Fi! LOL

Unfortunately in this industry, like in nursing & similar professions, you just have to get over it or don't do the job. Pedicures are a very popular beauty treatment & there are very few salons employing beauty therapists who can't/won't do pedicures. They really are one of the bread & butter treatments, and at the end of the day they are just feet. Perhaps putting them to soak in a nice scented bubbly foot bath first might help? I personally prefer pedicures to manicures as generally speaking feet are neglected & so you get a much better 'result'.

I did my first one on a paying client today
Was not that bad at all..!
Buuuttt She had nice-ish feet..!

Like Martin I think you just have to get over it. This is part and parcel of your chosen career, and you owe it to your clients to provide the very best and most professional of services. You cannot let it show that you want to heave at the stinky, manky feet, or that feet which have stalwartly carried a whole life around turn your stomach. One day your feet might be on the receiving end of such a treatment and how would you feel if your therapist turned their nose up at you? Your body language will speak volumes.
And to just think of the ££££££££ is, in my opinion, entirely the wrong approach. What you should be thinking of is your client and their needs; provide the best pedicure possible, with the most caring of attitudes and the ££££££££ will follow.

hey weldone hun the more pedicures you do the easier it will become and after a bit you wont even think about it you will just get on with it, you will always get the odd client with the feet you would dread to pedicure but just think of the money and that should help lol :)

I didn't particularly like pedicures when I first started but do you know, they are actually one of my favourite treatments to do now! I think if you try to change your way of thinking and think of it as a challenge, you will start to feel like you've really achieved something at the end of each pedicure ~ you'll soon start to love them too!

Well done on your first pedicure, did they look better after?? Bet they did ~ first challenge conquered!!

Why not think of how much better the client will feel after the treatment. It's not all about the money you know

Well yes obversily hun i dont just do nails for the money i do it because i am passionate about nails but it is my job and it pays my bills and puts food on the table and i was just trying to help as it is hard when your starting pedicures and your not very good working on feet, sorry if its upset you or anyone else it was just my opinion and approach on things .

Bianca

I've worked as a volunteer for Shelter washing the feet of the homeless whilst they're waiting for their turn with the chiropodist, and it was actually incredibly rewarding. I learnt very quickly to keep the conversation flowing and maintain eye contact as much as possible. Now I can face ANYONE'S feet! And always know that whatever they're like, I have seen worse! Face your fear, because people love and appreciate having their feet done
