What do you use to sterilise manicure tools?

It doesn't help either when companies call products they are selling things like "Nail Plate Sterilizer' when at best they are only sanitizing and not even disinfecting.

In my opinion it is false advertising ... gives those who know no better a false impression of what they are doing ... and is down right lying.

So true. This should be illegal.

As a recent example (outside the industry)... the local bowling alley sprays the inside of shoes in between players. The product they use is called sterilising spray. Being the germophobe that i am I sprayed my shoes (and the rest of my families) with Mundo Sanitizing Hand & Foot Spray BEFORE they went anywhere near our feet.

If manufacturers can't use the correct terminology what confidence can you have in their product?

Hey can anybody give me infomation on gamma radiation?

I also use mundo :)

They sell a barbicide (anti rust). I don't have a problem if I use this, even if I forget to take them out in time.

The longer you leave the tools in solution the less effective the disinfectant becomes. And please remember that BARBICIDE NEEDS CHANGING EVERY DAY!

(Fortunately there are alternative products on the market that last for a working week - saving you time and money without the risk of cross-infection)

Hi, just did a search for sterilising and this thread came up and has been very useful. When working before, I used to use Barbicide but as you say, it starts to rust the tools, so was looking for a new option. I have just googled Virkon as mentioned by Envy, could you tell me what form you would buy it in? I see they have it in tablet form to dissolve in water, I assume I could then put the solution into a little spray bottle and use that way to spray on my tools?? As well as use it to clean down my station?

This is one site I have found with the different variations of it

Or is Mundo a better option?

I tried Mundo recently (have used Barbicide for years). My tools started going rusty!
They are all good quality manicure tools (CND).
Any advice much appreciated x

I also have the problem with tools going rusty! I have a brand new set and after few insertions into mundo solution first signs of rust became apparent. Anyone has got any idea if we are doing something wrong or is it Mundo?

What Mundo product are you using?
Is it the new Power Plus Instrument Disinfectant, that lasts for 5 days?
Your tools are only supposed to be submerged in it for 15 mins.....I left mine in overnight and had problems with rust, but that was my fault not the products!!
I never had any problems with rusting at all with the Rapid Instrument and Tool disinfectant though, but I like just having to change my disinfectant tray once a working week with the Power plus, so I just need to check I take my tools out after my last client !!

I have the mundo power plus i&t disinfectant and to be honest I submerge my stuff for about 1to 2 hours- that might be where I am going wrong! I thought that the longer the better! Ouch!

And maybe my tools go rusty also because they're not a top quality ones but Sally's 'own range'?

I'll stick to 15minutes from mow on!

Anyone could recommend a good brand for manicure tools?

I usually use babrbicide to disinfect but currently have Ellisons own tool disinfectant. I also use a UV cabinet to sterilise and Mundo file and abrasive spray xx

hiya does anyone use a baby bottle steriliser for cuticle knife etc or just boil them up for a while in a pan? I cant afford to get an autoclave as they are too expensive! I always use Barbicide to sanitise them too.

I read onlinethat hot hot hot water kills most bacteria...so this is not the case?

When I ran out of barbacide I was just soaking in hot hot hot water before each client however I don't really have that many manicures...I am scared now that i didnt use it!

I bought milton now until i get to the wholesalers..I hope i'm just being paranoid. I also started just giving nail files to clients after use so that I didn't have to worry as I don't have a spray. what did they do back in the day hey before we know about all these germs! :)

Well I bought the cnd pusher and it has started to rust? Should we not leave soaking in water maybe?

It is vital that people take hygiene seriously. Hot water, milton, washing up liquid...these are simply not good enough.

There are more diseases around now than any other time in human history. There's no point in using a disinfectant that is only bactericidal - you have to consider viruses, spores and fungi too.

NEVER leave your tools in water - even the highest quality stainless steel will eventually rust.

Use a product for the job in hand. A specialist instrument & tool disinfectant will be quick and easy to use and will contain rust inhibitors to protect your tools. BUT MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE LABEL.

Some need changing every day!! Others can last for a week.

Get a product that suits your work style - but don't compromise on salon hygiene.

What do you recommend is the best for everything then?? is milton and barbicide not enough?

Please let me know as I do worry about anyone getting contaminated because of me :(

If you are a bit forgetful like me then use Sterilsafe. It never rusts anything. I have tried others but this stuff is very good.

If it's mixed with water then it will rust many tools eventually.

Soaking in hot water does nothing!!! Boiling for 10-15 mins will do a lot but why bother. Just use the right products and follow instructions!! It isn't hard to do once you have the right products!
