when can u say I'm a nail technician....??
I'm so new in the nails and beauty world(6 month and still studying)....
I'm so surprised that a lot of peeps call them self's nail technicians after getting only one certificate in any nail enhancement after one or two days course!!! :suprised:
when do u think u can say I'm a fully qualified nail technician?? and don't u think that the nail technician should know all the systems (Gel, L&P, Wrap) and get more involved in nails??

I only do L&P but i class myself as a nail tech! (the reason i only do L&P is because i done get anyone asking for anything else)

I only done a 5day course... as long as you are trained in nails i think its fine to call your self a nail tech!

x

I call myself a nail technician because i did a nail technicians course which came with a diploma saying i am now a nail tech lol

I was trained in gels, acrylics, fibreglass & nail art to get this qualification.

However, i now try to only use gels as i reaaallly don't like acrylics i dunno why i'm just weird and the clients i attract don't usually wish to have fibreglass nails.

Hi hiba,
I call myself a professional nail tech since registering my own business. Because I'm the owner of S'nails I need to have the title. I too have only been qualified for about 6 months but I have the certificate therefore I am a Nail Technician.
But personally I think you'll know when thr right time is to adopt the title yourself.
Hope that helps?

I don't think you need to be qualified in all three systems in order to call yourself a nail technician.

Don't forget also that many people are qualified purely in natural nail care and are excellent at it. It's how good you are in your chosen system that counts to me, not just learning as many systems as possible and being mediocre at them all.

I can hardly bring myself to say it! If people ask me what I do I get kinda shy and mumble 'beauty therapist'.......to me, that also covers me being a nail tech as I studied this during my beauty course, although I have done conversions afterwards....confidence is weird huh?

But some people wouldnt class me as a nail tech because I don't soley do nails.......I dunno, its weird!

I think if you've worked hard to gain the knowledge & achieve the qualification you deserve the title! I'm with soda on this one though - don't really know what to call my self (Beauty & Nail Therapist maybe?)

When my model kept them on with out lifting long enough to get a rebalance I thought, maybe I can do this, when Anne Swain signed my certificate I knew that meant I was a nail tech
The first time I completed a set on a customer in 1 and a half hours and she couldn't believe how great they looked and gave me a tip I decided I could call myself a nail stylist
I do L&P I am curious about gels but most peeps around here want L&P so haven't bothered I find there is plenty of scope with the system I aready use to do everything I want.
If BABTAC think my certificate is good enough to call me a professional then I'm not going to argue with them.
I did a 5 day course over 6 weeks and have done a few 121 training days with different people I have been going 2 years and I know my work is better then what is coming out of our collage. Because my teachers have been hand picked by me as some of the best in the industry.

yep im a beauty therapist i say im a nail tech because i trained with l&P have qual in mani and ped and am training in gel (although i don't offer this service yet)

Anyone can say they are a nail tech ... it's being a good or great nail tech that is the difficult one to achieve!

For me it's when you are consistent - minimal lifting, breakages etc, when they look sleek and smooth, when you can be confronted by any type of nail and cope. That you don't panic when a client leaves and wonder when they will be back with them all "pinged off". When your referral work slows down because their friends can't tell they've had their nails done.

And it's not just the nails, it's how you handle your clients too - customer service is key, and being able to handle those stroppy clients!

When you always strive to get better, even when the client can't see the little flaws that drive you crackers. When you realise that you'll never know it all.

That to me is a good nail tech ... bits of paper mean nothing as far as I'm concerned!

i dont think you need to be able to offer more than one system, to be able to call yourself a nail technician,

i had only done my mani and pedi certificate but i was still a nail technician, so therefore after completing my L&P cert with CND i am now still a nail tech,

JMHO

thanks all for the reply...wanted to hear the different opinions about that...that's true its not the certificate or the diploma its how good u r in nails...:)

Thats a good question.

My job title is "nail technician" but I dont have a certificate yet (still completing a 1 year/part time course which is purely nails).
In my mind im not a nail tech yet, so it feels kinda weird having that job title.

Big up yourself girlie....... !!! Your a Nail Technicial AND a Beauty Therapist.... hee hee.

That's what I'd say, if you've done beauty you're probably also a make-up specialist and a waxer etc etc etc....

I think it depends on the training you get in these short courses. I'm doing a college course at the moment and not liking it as much as I thought. We're left to our own devices a lot and not really 'learning' so much as just 'doing'. Which is pointless if we're doing it wrong! Like geeg says 'perfect practice makes perfect'. I agree a nail tech should know about all systems but not necessarily do them all.

Hey I had the same problem with my course, but I complained to the directors of the institute and to the company of the products we learn, and now we have a new tutor and are hopefully going to be taught properly. If you dont think you are being taught properly I do urge you to say something to someone as you should get ya moneys worth!

i agree with u that the colleges courses r not good as creative course and i regret that i didn't do a creative one....i choose the college one because i thought its better and its one year course and I'm very new in the UK and in the whole beauty world...but definitely I'm gonna do creative course after wards...

Hi hiba
I am from Nottingham but I now live in Australia, which college do you go to?
I recieved my certificate a year ago but due to moving I have not had chance to practice as much as I would have liked and have therefore lost alot of confidence. I agree with one of the other posters that you can be qualified but not good and thats me at the moment, although I am qualified I am in no way confident enough to do enhancements on the paying public but one day I will be.

it's a shame that some of you had such bad experiences with college courses. Mine was fab, we had a great tutor with much experience and passion for the industry. The course only lasted for 18 weeks, as when you do a BTec you learn each subject for 18 weeks, then after that time is up you can assesments whenever you feel ready.

Anyone else had a good experience doing nail technology as part of a college course?
