ive had 4 clients in today with mma nails on, after i got the little buggers off, then told the clients of the dangers etc from mma, they are now converted - i think if we keep doing this - abit like scare mongering - we will get them back - i know my new 4 clients will come back, they said the usual - they didnt do this or that etc- lets keeps this going and we get rid of the nss for sure

following on from that peter pan there is a write up in the February scratch magazine about the nail bar in Milton Keynes, they are trying to encourage people to campaign against mma, so the next time I go past there I will stop and have a chat with them.

Im with ya!! I get this all the time the last one today said (when i used a pusher) oh they just did that with their nail:eek: I m not so shocked but how can this be allowed to carry on?

I had similar treatment to my nails in a well known 'chain' of salons...

I noticed there is also a group on Facebook to try to ban MMA, I joined it today and bombarded all my fellow geeks with an invite to it

Yep, and I joined...:)

Not sure that clients are very aware of the MMA issue but they are concerned about the treatment that they get & how it differs from a regular salon,,,,

I have had a few mention that they know they use poisinous glue.....i educate them as i go lol

I'd have to say that about 80% of the clients I get from NSS salons don't have MMA on, they just hate the rough treatment from drills and cuticle damage.
I think MMA is becoming quite obscure here, the stench gives it away and many of the NSS salons have moved out of shopping centers (due to complaints about the stench) and they have gone for a less pongy solution .... I've also noticed since they have swapped to EMA their nails don't stick so well.

So I suppose it's a means to an end, the fact that their clients are mainly Sweaty Betty's that have recently discovered the luxurious advantages of slave labor on an average budget, sitting on their spa thrones with someone subservient practically licking their feet and smoothing their corns and chilblains for a dollar is quite encouraging, as often these women are not workers ....... and due to the so called recession and tightening of financial belts, husbands (who hold the purse strings) are trimming budgets and have banned them from nails and pedicures as they see them as an excessive and trivial service.

I feel our industry is going to turn around, there will be a slump, the NSS won't be able to afford their rents in shopping centres and will close down, their lack of quality is getting around and clients will look for a better service (less damage and longer lasting).

The other alternative is ...... they will turn their backs on nails and pedicures and won't get their nails done at all. It will be a very interesting next 6 months.

Yep i agree..... the clients are coming to good salons to get the mess sorted & educated....

These clients will not return.... in turn the rents for these high street shops cant get paid...unless the nails are just a front....

I have also noted the change in products from the nails coming form some salons....lots more coming away and not lasting the usual 6 weeks lol, still the same natural nail damage though.

what do you look for on facebook, what is the name of the group?

I've just joined the group, i can't believe that only 4 people have posted, there are soooo many members! Anyway, thankyou for the link,
Jo.xxx

I've just joined both groups ... i know a few that has damaged nails from NSS

:lol::lol: Ive joined.

Im sad to say one of my old clients returned back to the NNS salons ..because there quicker she said.I said what I had to say to her , but she was convinced her nails were fine underneath.

Some just dont wanna listen though.:rolleyes:

That group was started by one of my clients who was outraged when she heard to story on the radio about NSS salons and came to see me that very day......I don't think she's ever had nails on since. I did try back then to generate more interest but it didn't happen!

It's a shame that the photo isn't clearer as it shows major rings of fire and massively thinned nail plates.

I agree that most NSS don't use MMA but their other practices, especially trowelling out natural nail with the drill, leave much to be desired.

Ive posted a pic on there of some trashed nail beds!!:lol:

Hello all you Nail Geeks
I was reading through this thread with interest, as I don't do nail extensions or anything apart from manicure and pedicure at my salon. Please could someone explain briefly what MMA and NSS salons are? Some of my clients do have nail enhancements done and it would be good to be able to educate them as these products/salons sound very dodgy, judging by the tone of your comments. I think it would be good for me to be aware of these No-no's, as nails are such a big part of our industry.
Any information would be helpful if you have time to post, or even send me a PM.
Thanks in advance.

Hi there, i have just started working for myself in my friends hair salon doin manicures & nail extensions. I did a private course on acrylics and we spoke about mma. I have never been into one of the nail bars but know people who have, some said they have cut them & made them bleed but carry on regardless.
A family friend asked about me doin her nails & replied are you mad when i said i wouldnt be usin drills & dont think she liked the price im charging. Surely for an extra £10 and a personal touch & knowing your nails will not be damaged or worse! is worth it. Im spreading the word to all clients & friends.

I would really appreciate it too if someone has the time and could explain what a MMA and NSS salons are please. I don't extend either just NNO with gel but would appreciate the information. Thanks x

It might also be helpful if info about what MMA is is posted on to the FB page, as it doesnt explain, and some people may want to direct friends/clients there.

but what worry's me is when people say e-files are a no no, so when people come to my salon of which ive been trained to use an e-file they automatically assume that because I use an e-file I use MMA which isn't the case.
I am a proud Young Nails technician and due to repetitive strain use my e-file "it's my right hand man".
