I've just had my eyes opened to some interesting facts about the use of aceton in the salon on another thread. I know there are masses of phrases and statements customers use that are incorrect about nail enhancements but it seems that us techs can get out facts wrong as well. Me especially being new to the industry and being all ears to anything that is thrown at me.

I thought with the wealth of knowledge on this site it would be good to do some myth busting and share a bit of knowledge...

So I've got one to start the ball rolling... ahem...

I did a set of l&p enhancements last week and the young lady said 'don't you do gels? Gels are better for your nails'......

Are they....?

NO ... :) no system is better or worse for your nails...they all do the same thing...just sit there on top of your nails...nothing penetrates into your nail. Its all about how they are applied...how they are looked after and how they are removed....its these factors that can effect your nails...not the product.

a few others....

Eating jelly doesn't make your nails stronger....

Nails don't need to breath....

Here are some of the myths I have heard

"white tips are kinder to your nails"

"solar oil causes lifting"

:irked:

That milk and added calcium will make your nails stronger. Umm.. not really.. great for the bones but nails, skin, and hair are made mostly of keratin protein. Not calcium.

But here's a good tip! This was told to my hair dresser by her doctor and I've read this in some nail mags, too. Biotin vitamin supplement helps your nails and hair grow. Especially your hair.

An old colleague of mine used to keep her nail polish in the fridge because it lasted longer..... really? I'm thinking not....

Yep, Ive had many a customer who thinks that your nails need to breathe and that gels are kinder to your nails than L+P..... Some wouldn't take the truth either, also many still ask now how long it takes natural nails to recover afterwards, saying that acrylic ruins the natural nail, again, they wont listen when you explain that no damage "should" be done to the natural nail, (many of these people are nail biters with very little nail as it is).....Nails...it's a fantastic world we live in ay??

Pterygium - it's very often said that it needs to be removed during prep... it is in fact living tissue!

You can be a nail tech after only a 1 or 2 day course  Speaks for itself IMO!

What was the acetone thread about? I know that we used shed loads of the stuff at uni to clean glassware in the organic chemistry lab; along with even stronger stuff like ether and whatnot; used to come out of organic chemistry practicals reeking of solvents lol...

I like the one, L&P needs to be soaked off from time to time and a 'fresh' set applied.

Only this morning I told my daughter that her black overlay could do with infills, to which she replied... 'No, I'm having a rest'. What the.......!!!~?!??!

Yup thats in my EzFlow course notes and was one of my very first things to be sorted out when I joined!

How about the one that rather a lot of companies seem to use in advertising....

Nail techs can earn a fortune!

ROFLMFAO, I would love to be earning a fortune

ROFLMFAO, I would love to be earning a fortune

... would love to be earning anything! I bet most techs spend most of their time earning what they spend on education!! Geeks is such an apt name for this site!!

Loving every minute of it though...

Ok here's one since it's Halloween.. Nails grow after you are dead .. WWWWoooooo!!! When we pop our clogs our skin dries and shrinks back from the nails, making the nails look longer as more of the nail shows..

Im guilty of that.... I often wonder why I couldnt make it full time in the nail world, think its cause I got carried away with all the different bits and bobs, fashions and fads that I spent what I was earning (and more) on education and products. But.... my love for nails has by far exceeded any love Ive had before... well.. career wise anyway.., I guess if you can leave the trade shows alone and dont read any nail magazines, dont visit any salons, never get your own nails done, oh and of course...never look at the cashiers nails in your local supermarket, its a definate way to succeed.... If only ...... maybe I'l just try this last decal bafore I say never..... xx

The one I hear the most is "Ive got white spots on my nails I need to drink more milk"

My clients call these 'Calcium Spots'. They seem quite shocked when I tell them otherwise. My clients are a great bunch though, they are interested and want to learn more about nails/skin.
