I am slightly going to change the direction here as I have only just started nails and am still currently in my other job. I am a painter and decorator. I get,,,' you only gotta slap some paint on the walls'. Yeah....:sigh:..ok.....:twirls blonde hair:. I also am in partnership with my step dad and people automatically go to him rather than me thinking that I am the trainee! I used to get really cross, but now I just let it go and smile politely. People are so quick to judge others either for their jobs, clothes, car everything. People are what they are from the inside........not what they do, wear or drive etc.
We all have our talents,,,,even the ones who judge have some kind of thing they must be good at.

I would love to pretend this job is an easy ride. It so isn't! I am exhausted at the end of every day! But I am very proud of what I have achieved and I am the only woman I know (bar one) who paddles her own boat.

Not a proper job! Grrrrrr!

It is because of so many people having such impressions of us that I stated in my 'myspace' opening paragraph that I have GCSE's, A-levels and many more business-related courses in addition to my beauty/nails qualifications..
So that the idea that I am thick/dumb etc can be corrected before they look further into my web page!!!
It is sooooooo annoying isn't it how small minded people can be..

I would have been so annoyed to have people say that to me.. But, as stated earlier.. They were more than likely just jealous of you and the fact that you do something you love as a career, as opposed to doing a job you hate like them!!!!?? xxx

I think this is the perception of so many people when it comes to nails and beauty. Lets face it, you see these programmes on TV about beauty and you have your typical dumb blonde types, (not meaning this is my opinion.) the ones that seem to do this profession to feel like they are above everyone else, especially compared to nails and always seem to be slim, tanned and wanting to open a salon to cater to all the footballers wives types.

The media never does help a profession like ours does it? I mean, what knowledge do you need to know about when all you do is slap some make up on, shape and paint a few nails and maybe apply wax and rip it off like its a band aid.

I tell people i am a nail tech and love my job. If they try and make me feel as if i am just doing a dead easy job, i also say to them, do they get to work when they want? Earn what they want? Time off when they want?

I never let anyone make me feel inadequate when it comes to what i do. We are good at what we do, passionate and care about the clients we have. Not many can say they love what they do and enjoy their job. Half the time i don't see it as a job, its something i love to do and happen to get paid for it. Plus i get to meet some lovely people.

The correct answer is "yes, it's a lovely relaxing job painting someone's nails, but how many of you have run your own business?"

Is it not a real job? I must remind myself of that when I start at 8.30 and finish at 8pm with no lunch hour!

I had a similar conversation to this at college the other week, the way in which we are perceived is down to how we present ourselves unfortunately in this industry professionalism is largely lacking.

Until something can be done to correct this, then there is little we can do but counter this image by ensuring we are thoroughly professional in what we do - both in work and out of it.

In all honesty I dont care what ppl think in regards to it being an easy job... remember they may gab on about it being perceived as an easy job but they are the ones handing over that $90 for the full set of nails which have to be maintained over and over if they want to keep them in tip top shape (Hey just hand me your wallet now and lets save some time!)... while you smile and take that $90 and laugh all the way to the bank.. whos the silly ones?

I think learning to do nails is soooo hard and I really admire all nail techs who have mastered the art, eg nailzoo guy is fab, I'm a hairdresser learning nails and I find doing nails is so hard and really intricate but I love it and i would have been upset at what they said too nasty ******

I had a similar thing said to me about hairdressers being airheads  the person who said it was a make up artist who had only just qualified, I was new there so I said nothing and I felt like crap as lots of people were around,
I respect everyones chosen career ,and if you enjoy it its not like work if you know what I mean , we all get tired at the end of the day,
little did she know that I had also done theatrical make up ,and make up for television, and camera, plus make up and manicure and pedicure both IHBC which included tinting eyelashes too , I just left it to her own ignorance and immaturity, I reckon these people are so full of themselves they just don't see any one else's talents, they honestly believe they are the best at everything they do and no one else knows as much as them , I think these people usually have closed minds and can only learn so much because they don't realize there is always new stuff to learn.

Sorry for sounding off but it really gets to me when people are nasty about other peoples chosen professions,:hug:a hug for you and one for me:hug:

the word is megalomanics for all these meanies,:irked:
or maybe its just me :confused:being a paranoid plink:)

I'm an ex-physics teacher who has at 53 trained as a nail tech. I get the same response even from family. I have degrees who cares what the buggers think, I Love My Job
maggie-may

Don't listen to those who tell you that being a Nail Tech is not a real job. They're only jealous 'cause they can't do every day something different. They're used to do every day the same things, routine...instead a Nail tech can do every day a different work!!!:lol::lol:

Well, i really never had this but i would have no problem explaining to them that "this little dumb (now blonde) girl is a marine biologist and that she makes more money that her boyfriend which is a night club manager". And that i only started in this business 3 years ago... Puts things in prespective doesn't it?

Like Minky, I have had 'dumb' comments as a hairdresser. When I was younger it used to bother me but now it doesnt. I look at my salon, nice house and car, bought and paid for by myself alone. I am also supporting my husband financialy through uni.

Id be a 'dumb' hairdresser any day! :)

:eek: yes i know how you feel im a hairgeek and i find the same attitude hairdressing isnt seen as a job wonder if we could swap jobs for the daY:!::!: THEIR attitudes would change then haha:eek:

let your mates etc say what they want flower, you know how ,much work etc you have put in for this - so its there loss, they are just showing ignorance becuase they dont understand the time, effort, and cost it was for you to ge twhere you are - the one that works for me is this:

if you think YOU can do it, then do my nails - they not that forthcoming tho in volunteering (sp) maybe then they will take you more serious

dont let these "freinds" get you down, you keep at it flower and bugger them, who will be coming to YOU for their nails doing,? and it wont be YOU going to THEM.................

You took the words right out of my mouth Becki:)

:!:

Again it comes back to educating.Making people aware that YOU ARE important as just a doctor or a dentist especially when it comes to after care.
I mean when someone sees a doctor and is handed out a prescription you would automatically take it,and the same goes for us aswell.

oh phleeeeeeeease - you won't help anyone take us seriously talking like that.:!:
get things in perspective - we are not saving lives.
i am a retired(due to ill health) senior specialist nurse and have chosen to train as a nail technician so i can work for myself at my pace in a career I knew I would love and I ain't disappointed one little bit.
i get cross eyed studying nail diagrams and dizzy trying to remember product chemistry
there is so much to learn and i know the committment it takes to try to keep on learning and now realise the money it takes for CPD but hey i'm the happiest I've been for years.

I really don't worry what other people think. I have had all sorts of jobs and I love this one the most. The thing is I have the inelligence to do something that I enjoy and not get stuck in the rat race hating my job and working for some corporate conglomerate that treats me like a number! It has given me a trade that I can take anywhere in the world ... and I have!!!

I have to say I've been really lucky in this respect. Everyone I know has been very supportive, as they know how passionate I am about nails, know I'm intelligent and realise the earning potential.

The only odd reaction I've got was from my boss. As some of you know, I'm hoping to get a good redundancy payout by the end of the year which will help me set up my business. He asked me what I was going to do if I get it so I told him.

He looked at me like I'd sprouted an extra head and tentacles and was dribbling green slime!

 I have 2 University Degrees and CHOSE to be a Nail Tech after Ill-health............You are all at the same level doing Nails sitting down even if the 2Wheels on my chair are a LOT larger than 4 wheels on my clients chair.........and it's more Creative, Fun and Rewarding than most Intellectual Bull.........Anyway:hug: Brandibam............
