Some people . Is it just me or is this person unreasonable?

I have just had a phone call from a lady who had a French manicure done by her daughter's friend who is training at college. Apparently she has done a lovely job, but last this lady went to a high street salon for a spray tan as she is attending a ball tonight. Spray tan ruined her French, so she was asking if I could do a repaint. She can't ask her friend's daughter as she is at college today .

Having not seen her nails, I said that I would think she would need everything removed and completely redone paintwise as nails are already filed. Another salon quoted her £15 which she thought was
Bl**dy rediculous! Doesn't any body realize that there is a recession on? [unquote]!!!!

I couldn't help her as I am otherwise engaged today (thankfully), but explained that I doubted she was going to get this done any cheaper professionally because the current polish would need to be removed and completely repainted ie. base coat, pink, French and top coat.

Her reply
Yes I know, but it's just a paint! I only expect to pay about £8 .[unquote] I explained that it involved time and skill and she replied
Well it's a rip off! I could do it myself [unquote]. I'm thinking....why don't you?

I politely replied that I was sorry, but I could not help her. I would have charged her £18 for removal and repaint for French..... but did not tell her that.

I charge less than a high street salon but competitively for my area. So, have I got it wrong? Is she unreasonable and unrealistic in her thoughts?

Don't upset yourself. You are not being unreasonable. She clearly couldn't have done it herself ........ or she would have.

Don't waste any more energy worrying about it. It will ruin your day if you let it. Forget her and enjoy looking forward to a lovely bank holiday lol!

Out of interest, how much would a salon near you charge for a re-paint?

I would have probably charged about £10-£12 but aside from the money, it's sometimes good to help someone out, because you get to meet them, and they may turn into a good client.

I do appreciate, she doesn't necessarily sound like she would become a good client, but you never know. She may have been having a bad day, and even if she didn't become a good client, there is always the possibility she has friends to give your number to.

OMG!!!! do people charge more for doing a french paint... i dont...and didnt even realise!!! i only charge £7.50 for shape and paint....french or one colour. i dont charge for an enamel removal.
I do however think that she sounds as if she was quite rude towards yourself though.....
i think i may review my prices, lol!!!

Definitely Sian....French takes longer to do , so you should be charging more for it than an ordinary polish.

Mrs Clooney I think this woman would have failed my 'attitude test' much as I would never want to turn business away and try my best to help everyone out if I can, I would have said no in this case.
She lost me at "bl**dy ridiculous" lol!!!

goodness!! we are only charging £9 in the salon for a french polish!!

£18 is amazing - I am in the wrong job!!

Going to a ball and quoting recession?
Isn't that "bl**dy ridiculous"?
Maybe she is just stingy?

glad its not just me then.

just out of interest how long does it take everyone to do a french then???

Well personally I think the ladies attitude and shock shouldnt really be a surprise....and has only been encouraged I would think by the high amount of technicians that (in my view) charge peanuts for manicures and tidy and polish type services.
While researching prices for myself ive looked at loads of geeks price lists and tbh im shocked and quite dissapointed at the measly few quid thats being charged for the natural nail care services....why?! if they are portrayed in price as unimportant and cheap then of course...they will be perceived that way by clients no? x

I would have charged just £8. Which is the same as my mini mani price but includes buff, file and shape and polish with french another £2.

So just £8 to redo polish, wouldnt take more than 10 mins .

I think I may have to change my prices too I only chage £7 for shape and varnish even if its a french polish! x:)

Well, salons in my area are quite cheap....so I have tried to match them or go a little bit cheaper. At the mo, I charge £5 for a file and polish and £7 for the french polish. But, I am only starting out so dont feel I shoul dcharge more than that at the moment. But, in time, my prices will go up :) xx

I'd charge £12 and I would be asking why the spray tan technician did not barrier her nails or at the very least wipe the excess off her nails after the spray was applied ???

You are no way in the wrong :)

Lorraine

I would tell the client to go to the salon where she had her spray tan done, and ask THEM to re-polish their nails, as it was their mistake.

I'm with Zo-Zo I would have painted her nails for the £8 and turned her into a great client as I would have said that when I do a spray tan I would either barrier cream the nails or paint them afterwards.
I also think that some of ye are out of your minds with the prices you charge and its way too low for the time you spend. my french is €15 its about €3 more than my comp. if I was in/around the city it would be €20

Sorry Peeps, I don't think I worded my initial post very well. I was quite gobsmacked! So please allow me to clarify....

Yes, I definitely charge more for a French. It takes longer than a standard paint of one colour and it is not like applying a French gel where you have a little time to manouver your brush and touch up. Polish dries very quickly so it is best to get it right first time.

Sorry for the confusion Gina. I would not have charged her £18 for the French paint. My error . What I meant is that I would have charged her £18 for a classic manicure with cuticles, file and shape including massage. It would cost an extra £3 for French. This is about 45 minutes work to me.

I would have charged her £12 for the removal, cleanse and repaint plus £3 for the French. So £15. About 30 minutes work. I don't think this is unreasonable and is about right for my area.

Going to a ball and quoting recession?

This is what I thought. I wonder how much the ball tickets cost?

If a client just wanted polish removal and then a french polish I would charge £10 and to be honest I would'nt expect to pay much more than that either. From what you said she didn't want a manicure with massage etc, just polish. Tbh doing a French doesn't take me much longer at all than a normal polish so I also don't charge differently, and I know this is unusual as most other salons in my area also charge. But to me a deep red could be seen as more difficult than a pale colour, so should we also charge more for that?

It's a shame you couldn't fit her in because she is obviously someone who likes to have treatments and you could have turned her into a profitable client for yourself.

You couldn't fit her in anyway so i wouldn't worry...

She was getting all upset because her nails got ruined and she has a ball to go to...i bet in normal circumstances she wouldn't have sounded off like that...also if she is used to her friends daughter who is in training then she is probably used to paying training prices.

If i had space and was doing nothing else...i would have done them for a smile, just for the feel good factor it would give me and her....

There is nothing worse than making all your plans for a special night out and then they go wrong..i feel sorry for her...she was disappointed and wound up and took it out on you..i am sure she didn't mean to.

It boggles my mind the difference in prices from the UK to the US!...at least in a small town. No one would pay those prices here. Bigger cities might be more comparable though. I would charge 7.50 for a polish change only. 10 for a shape and polish. And as someone said earlier, it doesn't take me any longer to do french than it does any other color (and my french polishes are pretty good, I think). I need to move to the UK!

I charge £3.00 extra for french, I just add that on to the manicure they require.....and thats too cheap......they are more trouble than they are worth lol

If they come back with a smudge I reddo the whole nail ..... & I dont charge for that...simply because in a small town I need happy clients ....
