Slightly embarassing question for all you tanning geeks!

Hello tanning geeks

Just thought I'd ask this question as I'm not brave enough to ask anywhere else.

I'd love to get a spray tan but I am a LARGE momma (size 28 clothes!) and have always been way too embarrassed to get my wobbly tummy etc out in front of someone in a salon, especially as most beauticians seem to be size 8 beautiful wee things! I have visions of being asked to lift up my stomach so they can spray underneath!!!!!!! :green::green:

Can anyone reassure me that you see all sorts of shapes and sizes, or are my suspicions that I'd get laughed at justified?!

why dont u get a older lady to come to ur home!!! i never judge anyone!!! If they laugh or say anything, they are not a pro!!

My clients come in all shapes and sizes, but the majority are size 18+.
I work as a mobile tech, so that maybe the reason?.... You don't need to feel as vulnerable in your own home, do you.

Don't allow your body image to dictate your happiness.... if you want to treat yourself to a tan go for it!
No one is ever happy with their body...... even the size 8 therapist - she probably thinks she has a saggy butt!!

If the thought of going into a salon is a bit much to take, maybe search for a mobile tech.

Rest assure that beauticians see all sorts of shapes and sizes and to b honest, they dont really take much notice. When I first started spray tanning, it was a bit embarassing, but now i dont even think about it. I just make sure the tan is even and that your happy with it. By the way, I am definatley not a wee size 8!! Far from it! Girls come in who r v slim with hang ups about themselves too so try not to eworry bout it!

Trust me we do see all shapes and sizes and all manner of unusual things.
I would say there are also lots of therapists that are all shapes and sizes... im short, chubby and old....ish.
Try a mobile or home therapist they have usually done their time in the salon and are often older.

Thanks for asking the question, I have exactly the same fears and am similar size to you. I am going to do Level 3 Beauty Therapy next year and am looking forward to learning spray tanning but dreading having the other students do it to me.
Before I started Beauty Therapy (last year aged 40) I had loads of fears about all the students being size 8 and aged 17 but they are not.

the spraytan Gal's (and boy's)have seen and done it all before and will make you feel extreemly comfortable and at ease so no worries there :hug:

In all honesty we actually don't see the body itself as were far to busy considering the application of the tan itself...trust me no one is going to laugh or make any comment whatsoever..these are professionals and as such consider their customers welfare at all times...

After all if we were to laugh at you ..well you wouldn't come back now would you....so it simply isn't going to happen :hug:


I am certain you are pretty safe in that whomever spraytan's you in that you will receive nothing other than a curtiouse service from your chosen provider.

So go on ..give it a go and do let us know how you got on :hug:

Being big isn't always bad - my stepsister is an aromatherapy massage girl, and she LOVES massaging fat people as she says on skinny ones it's hard to get the old hands going!!!

the majority of ppl that i have sprayed so far , have all said before hand, ohh i look horrible, or poor you having to see me like this etc etc,

i reassure them they can be tanned in whatever they feel comfortable in, they dont have to stand there in their paper knickers if they dont want to!!,

i inform them of what im going to do, before i do it, so they are not shocked or surprised by anything!

i always start on their back, and talking to them about the weather, their holidays, or what they are going to get up to at the weekend, in between im asking them to do a quarter turn etc, before they know it im done, and to be honest i never look at the body as a whole, but just as sections of skin i need to spray!!!

after it s over, they all say, well it wasnt as bad as i thought!,

i always leave the room for them to undress and dress etc and provide big fluffy towels

You most certainly wouldnt have to worry about the sprayer making you feel uncomfortable! We really have seen it all, trust me!! See if any of your friends can recommend anyone. The people who know you would proberly be able to judge if someone would make you feel comfortable. Go for it!!:hug:

Hiya! I really wouldnt worry about your size hun. I spray a rolly-polly gram once a week who is bigger than you. I am not here to judge,simply here to make my money and do a good treament.None of us are perfect at the end of the day !!
You will feel so much better about yourself with a lil bit of colour...GO FOR IT!!! X

I have to say that 70% of my ladies who had spray tans was a size 18+. They always said how worried they was because of the way they looked, would i judge them, look down at them etc

Well no i wouldnt and im not perfect either, i have my lumps and bumps, ripples and dimples and i even said to one lady if it made her feel any better and relaxed her i would strip to my underwear and spray her lol

She didnt believe me so i started to take my tunic off lol bless her she flapped and was laughing that much because she thought i wouldnt, it broke the ice and she became a regular. Said i put her at ease :lol:

Honestly don't worry! I'm sure that everyone feels the same way whatever size they are! I have sprayed size 8 young girls with not an ounce of fat on them and they are worried about their horrible knees, spotty skin etc etc and I have sprayed larger ladies who are full of apologies for being large ... I am not a skinny minny either, I am size 16 - 18 and only 5 foot nothing so you can imagine!! and I also feel horrible getting my kit off for a tan, even if my hubby does it cos its about the only time i'll stand in front of him like that with the lights on!!!

I can honestly say I dont take any notice at all - just concentrate on not missing any areas....and you dont have to strip right off, wear a swimsuit if it makes you feel more comfortable! i've sprayed a lady in a dress before now! lol :hug:

I do exactly the same.

If you feel more comfortable, wear a swimsuit with the straps down for the first time.
You'll soon realise that it's a job to us, and not a source of amusement :hug:

Oh sweetheart we see every size and shape that you can imagine and the only thing on our minds is making you feel at ease and ensuring you leave a happy client with a beautiful tan,
and we come in all shapes and sizes too :lol:
no one would laugh at you or judge you even after you had left,
when we are trained this is all part of our training, to treat everyone with respect and understanding and give them the privacy that they need and to make them feel comfortable,
never mind what we see, you would be amazed at what we hear too, my clients say i could charge for a counseling service,
but at the end of the day we are all professionals and nothing ever leaves the salon,
please go and have a spray tan, you will feel great after, if i was close enough i would do it for free just to prove that no one would laugh or judge you :hug:

I am a newbie to this site- and until now a bit of a lurker but I just HAD to post a reply to this thread. What an absolutely lovely thread crammed with proper professionals!
I used to be a lot bigger than I am now- and would never have dreamed about going for a spray tan due to my size, even though my wobbles looked so much better with a bit of colour imo!
Up until I read this thread I wouldn't have had the courage to go for a spray tan even now, I still have the same hang ups that I had as a larger lady! What a lovely thread to read :Love:

I did my first tan on a topless girl the other day, She's my sisters friend and I've known her since she was 12! I thought I'd be really shy and get all worried but it was honestly like I never even noticed, I was too busy concentrating on spraying the skin properly.

You've nothing to worry about hun, you'll see, once you've got the first one over with you'll be back every two weeks! xx

Hi, just go for it. Dont worry about what they think, they should be just concentrating on doing a good job, not trying to put another lady down. There is too much of that in todays world.

And rememeber if you are made to feel uncomfortable, dont go there again.

Also, you dont have to go for a full body, then can leave your tummy out, if you would prefer.

aww hun , i know its scary but if you get a good spray tan therapist then you will feel totally at ease :hug:
every single person i do says something about their body even if they are a size 8 , so everyone has hang ups chick no matter what size
i have done people of different shapes and sizes and to be honest i really do not see it , i just get on with the job , :green:
please dont bbe scared of having one done , i am sure there will be a geek near you that can do it for you , then you will know you are getting a professional therapist who you can maybe contact first and sort of get to know a bit to make you feel at ease hth xxxxx
